It seems to be slowing down a little so I thought I would share this picture.

My sons first elk taken last season when he was 11 years old.

550 lbs.

1 shot through the heart with a .243 at 80 yards (100 grn. Nosler Partition).

Nice! It's great to get out there with the kids I bet. I'm looking forward to hunting with my daughter in 4 or 5 years.

Great! My first elk was a cow too. I was 16 and it was the first day of elk season in Colorado.

Elkman 7X7,

Yes it was a 6A hunt. As a matter of fact he shot the elk on the mountain west of Mormon Lake. It was quite the chore getting it on the roof of the Jeep. I had to cut it up into 4 pieces with a bow saw, because I left my Saws-all at home; heft the pieces to the hood; then slide them up the windsheild to the roof. The roof bowed in but it popped back into place after I hit it from the inside.

The great thing was after we had it on the roof it was only 15 minutes down the mountain to the Juniors Elk Camp. The G&F puts it on and it is sponsered by the RMEF. There is a game processor on site that takes the kids elk in right there. They weigh it, give you ticket and put in a freezer truck. You pick up the meat in Phoenix about 3 weeks later.

The "Elk Camp" is pretty cool. On the night before the hunt the game wardens go over safety rules, tracking skills, shot placement, survival, and game care with the kids. There are prizes available from RMEF if they answer the questions right. The hunt lasts for 4 days and you can stop in anytime to ask for advice, help in retrieving your game, and just get a cup of hot chocolate. There is always burgers and dogs on the grill at night for dinner.

The Kids love the experience.

Az Jim,
I had 2 ladys hunting the cow hunt in 5bs meleton mesa area. We stoped to talk to some guys and they were hunting both the cow hunt in 5b and the junior hunt in 6a. The guy said he was having a great time overthere. He was burning a lot of fuel running beteen unites with both hunts going on. I have a place in 5bs and hunt there all the time. Here is my email if you ever have a need for info in 5bs. elkman7x7@yahoo.com.
