HUNTING REPORT Nov. 06, 2003

The Kansas City Star

The hunting report will be published each Thursday during the fall and early winter. Weekly waterfowl counts are provided by wildlife biologists based on surveys conducted early in the week.

MISSOURI


• FOUNTAIN GROVE: 10,000 ducks (mostly mallards, ringnecks); 100 Canada geese. Hunting has been fair. On Monday, 47 hunters took 105 ducks. Water is still being pumped into marshes.

• SWAN LAKE: 75,000 ducks (mix of species); 8,000 geese. Hunting has been fair.

• SQUAW CREEK: 73,571 ducks (40 percent mallards, 30 percent teal); 386 geese.

• BOB BROWN: 5,500 ducks (40 percent mallards); 3,000 geese (mostly snows and blues). Hunting has been good. Pressure is heavy; parties are being turned away daily. Water conditions are good.

• GRAND PASS: 25,000 ducks (mix of species). Hunting has been fair to good. On Monday, 47 hunters took 197 ducks.

• FOUR RIVERS: 49,000 ducks (40 percent mallards, 30 percent pintails); 125 Canada geese, 95 whitefront geese. Hunting has been good. Water conditions are good.

• SCHELL-OSAGE: 7,000 ducks (mostly teal); 950 geese (85 percent Canadas). Hunting has been good. From Nov. 1-3, 247 hunters took 937 ducks and 9 geese. Water conditions are good.

• MONTROSE: 4,800 ducks (75 percent mallards); 7,000 snow geese; 75 Canada geese. Hunting has been good. Water conditions are good.

• SMITHVILLE: 6,000 ducks (mostly gadwalls, mallards, scaup); less than 1,000 Canada geese; 400 snow geese. Hunting has been fair to good.

• OTTER SLOUGH: 12,000 ducks (mostly mallards, teal and gadwalls). Hunting has been fair to good. Pressure is heavy. Water conditions are good.

• DUCK CREEK: 14,000 ducks (mostly mallards and gadwalls); 125 geese. Hunting has been fair to good. From Nov. 1-3, 211 hunters took 478 ducks. Water conditions are fair to good.

KANSAS

• CHEYENNE BOTTOMS: 4,000 ducks (mix of species); 30,000 geese; 200 sandhill cranes. Duck hunting has been poor; goose hunting has been good. Geese are leaving Unit 1A and flying over hunting zones.

• MARAIS DES CYGNES: 10,000 ducks (mostly green-winged teal and gadwalls). Hunting has been poor to fair.

• NEOSHO: 8,000 ducks (mostly teal, mallards and gadwalls). Hunting has been poor to fair. During the first segment of the duck season, 585 hunters took 767 ducks.Water is being pumped into Pool 1.

• FLINT HILLS: 3,800 ducks (mostly mallards, green-winged teal); 575 geese (90 percent snows and blues). Marshes are half to three-quarters full.

• PERRY: 3,500 ducks (half teal, half big ducks). Hunting has been poor to fair. Kyle and West River marshes are producing best hunting.

• TUTTLE CREEK: 3,000 ducks (mix of species). Hunting has been fair. Black Vermillion and Fancy Creek marshes have best conditions.

• MILFORD: 8,200 ducks (80 percent wigeons); 5,450 ducks (mostly snows and blues). Hunting has been fair to good. Water conditions are good.

• QUIVIRA: 30,000 ducks (mostly mallards); 97,500 geese (42,000 Canadas, 51,000 whitefronts, 4,500 snows and blues); 127,000 sandhill cranes. Hunting has been fair.

• MELVERN: 500 ducks (mix of species); 100 resident Canada geese. Hunting has been fair.

• HILLSDALE: 800 ducks (mix of species). Hunting has been good.

• KIRWIN: 800 ducks (mostly mallards and teal); 300 Canada geese. Hunting has been poor. Water conditions are poor.

• NORTON: 5,000 ducks (mostly mallards, gadwalls and teal); 25,000 geese (mostly snows and blues).

• McPHERSON VALLEY: 600 ducks (mostly teal); 150 geese. Hunting has been good. Conditions are good. All units have water.

• JAMESTOWN: 1,500 ducks (mostly teal, mallards and gadwalls). Conditions are good. Hunting has been poor.
