January 8th payed off again for me this year. last year i came up with one little 3 point on the 8th so i figured i'd take a little walk and see if i could beat some of the competition to the early field drops again this year. I was walking the edge of an alfalfa field when i stopped and searched the woodline, Just on the edge of the woods laid this small three point

After taking a few pictures i walked about 20 yards into the woods to see if the match was laying close by, that's when i spotted this pretty little 4 point

Here's another look at the 4 point

[attachment=48458:jessies3.jpg]

I was feeling really good at this point because i really hadn't planned on finding much.....it's a feeling that i can't explain but i'm sure you all can relate to. About 200 yards past the second shed i was walking along a thin patch of standing corn when i rounded the bend i could see tall tines sticking up....... but as i started to run towards them i seen that it was a dead deer and not a shed.

When i picked up his head to look at him his right side popped off. This is a deer that was seen a few times throughout the season by a couple of my co-workers....he must have been hit by a car sometime during bowseason and had a badly broken hind leg. With the hard start to the winter that we had here with freezing rain and a thick crust on the snow the tests of mother nature finally had gotten to him. Sad to see such a nice buck fall victim to hard times like that but i guess that's just the way ma nature works. I taped his right side out at 65" so it's right up there with my best find ever, although i don't know that i can consider it a shed. Lastly here's a picture of the finds for the day

I was out of town for a few days and couldn't stop thinking about the other side that had dropped off of the dead buck that i had found so when i got home on the 14th i spent about 4 hours grid pattering the standing corn and woods near where i had found him. I didn't find the match but i did come across another nice 4 point in a standing corn field.

Here it is at home

It's been a pretty productive start for me this year but it's still really early here with most of the bucks still packing horns. They are predicting snow for the next three days which should be good to concentrate the deer and hopefully i can resist walking for a few weeks to make sure i don't go pushing them out of my area.

We got snow tonight and I thought the same exact thing. It will keep me from walking to early. Congrats on the early ones there are always just a bonus for the season.

Good Work! That's a great start with some nice bone too. Still a lot of snow where I'm at in Wisconsin. Good start and good luck.

nice sheds. congrads on them freshies.
but i do have one question. did you keep the skull to that dead buck? i found a set of sheds last year and then found the buck they went to. i cleaned up the skull and the set looks great displayed with the skull. i didnt put them back on the skull just have them lying one each side of it. just giving you an idea

BigRacks, that was the first thing i thought of when i came across him with the one side missing. I hadn't planned on the other side popping off when i picked it up....it would've been really sweet to have one still attached and then find the side that he's dropped already for an interesting display. I will probably collect the skull after the scavangers clean him up a little. Hopefully i will be able to find the other side.

Thanks for the comments fellas

It's taken me awhile to get this on here but on the 24th of January i woke up to 28 degrees below zero and i had the day off....i figured it was too cold to do anything but take a walk in the woods, so i waited for the sun to come up and took a walk in some public hunting grounds that i've been eyeing up. I didn't have any luck there but came really close to getting a great picture of an owl, unfortunately i was a little too slow digging my camera out. Well that was a bust so i figured i'd head to another area that i haven't checked out yet this year. I only managed to come across this little 4 point but it was good to find something with the snow depth that we had.
