You can apply now for a 2002 KY elk permit.  http://www.ky-direct.com/kdfwr/product.asp...amp;pf%5Fid=023

It costs $10.00.  It's a lottery as only 10 permits will be issued.  The money goes to completing the restoration.  Currently there are around 1500 animals in a 2.6 million acre area.  There are still a few areas to have releases.

Last year was the first hunt, here are 3 of the lucky hunters.

I applied this past season. Last year they required you to have a hunting license before the drawing. For the 2002 hunt they dropped the having a license before the drawing requirement. I will be applying every year. It's $10 to apply and the tag is free (or was).

Hey guy's I'd like to apply. It's a lot scloser than driving to Colorado.

Kentuck >> You said they dropped the having a license before the drawing but the web site that Wapati pointed to say's

"Applicants must hold a current year Kentucky hunting license (resident or non-resident) prior to the time of the drawing to be eligible for the draw. "

What's up? Any clarification? I want to apply,, but don't want to buy a license unless I'm going hunt'n...

You no longer need to have a license prior to the drawing.  You will need a license to hunt if you get drawn.

i'll be applying again this year - and every year after this year.  Never been elk hunting, but would love to get to try sometime.  Reckon if i get drawn i'll have to hire somebody to put me on one of them - oh well, as few tags as there available i guess i'll burn that bridge when/if it gets here :)

You can count on me applying! I hope that there is a patch involved again.

You can bet that the non-resident applications will increase this year due to the license requirement being dropped.

Thanks Wapiti for the info. I looked on the KY website and didn't see any hunt info for dates and how the hunt is for say areas or zones. Any ideas? Thanks.

The bull hunt will be in October, the cows in December.  The rut will still be going in October.  The hunt will be on public land and zones determined a couple months prior to the hunt.  It is an extremely good opportunity to take a P&Y or maybe a B&C next year depending on weapon choice.

Many of the bulls are 5x5 and 6x6 at 2.5 years old.  As we get more bulls at 7.5 and 8.5 there should be several 400+ bulls.  Next year our oldest bulls will be 5.5, unless we get some older bulls from NM or AZ, which I doubt as they do not travel well.

I will be applying, but I have not seen any info about the patch.

Do you know anything about it?

WAPITI

Just read your post and applied.  Thanks for the information.  I feel it is a good $10 spent even with not drawing.

I've seen the patch, I like the 2002 better than last year's.  As of now the applications are half what they were this time last year.  I applied Friday when I renewed my licenses.

Got mine today in Harlan. Did not get my licenses since I will probably be moving to NC before deer season.
