Good idea Jesse.... I know these guys aren't being mean-spirited, but it's asking for problems from the far left. And believe me, they are a pushy bunch

youngblood, great photo's and the story made me feel like i was right there.this will be my first year hunting on the west coast,i am originaly from back east. i am really excited about having the opportunity hunt differant species of game that i did not have back east like muleys and sitkas and wild pigs. after reading your story i cant wait to expeiriance hunting wild pigs now! it got my heart pumping.
question,i also shoot carbon express terminator hunter selects and i am still debating on which broadhead to use, either the montec or teken 2. due to pigs tough shoulder plate i know the montec does the job from what i have read and seen, but as far as arrow flight tuning is their much of a differance between the heads for like forty yard shots?
if anyone else has an oppinion on these heads please let me know, thanks and have a great 06'hunting!

Welcome to JHO TRA. I have only used the Tekken II .125 g and there was no difference from shooting my field tips when tuning. All of my shots have been w/in 18 yards, most w/in 10 yards when I've been hog hunting. I tried the Crimson Talon....waste of time. I am sure there are others that shoot the Montec and they may be able to assist you more than I can. You'll love hog hunting, I've never experienced anything like it.

thanks for the quick reply youngblood, good food for thought.i am sure every hunter finds its hard to find one broadhead that can do it all for all speceis of game, but thats why i ask maybe thier is.my thought is eventually as the hunting season progresses out west here with different game i notice a hunter will have the oppertunity to hunt different game at one time when out in the feild like deer, bear, wild pigs.so my thinking is i would like carrie some shafts with the montecs and some with the teken for different hunting situations and game, for short distant shots and for long distant shots, but that would not be possible because the bow would have to be tuned diff. for each head, mechs. fly diff. then fixed right.
so if i had to choose for all situations i would respect your oppinion on this subject and any other members oppinion or choice,i am strickly a bowhunter nothing agianst guns just my pref. thanks

Welcome to the West and JHO. I migrated from the East about 8 years ago now and after hunting elk, pigs and mulies I find it tough hunting back on the East coast. Something about hunting in the high mountains is just the ticket for me!

Anywho, back to your question. Personally I am not a fan of expandables on hogs. I shoot the Montec and am a huge fan of it. As you can see from the penetration of YB's arrow, penetration is key for hogs. Anything that robs penetration when shooting hogs I think is a bad thing. I nailed a 90 pound sow with a 675 grain arrow with a montec on the front and didn't get a full pass through and I was shooting about 68 lb/feet of KE. They are tough !!!! Especially if you hit the plate or shoulder.

I find that my montecs will fly perfectly fine out to 50 IF my bow is tuned right. If not, well, any BH will not fly great. I only use openers if hunting turkey and sometimes deer. I also am not a fan of the design of the Tekan II. I hear good reports but something about it just doesn't sit well with me. Anyway there's my 2 pennnies worth.

Welcome to JHO....i used a Tekan for 4 hours and didn't care for it, if you walk w/ an arrow always knocked like i do, the blades catch on damn near everything you walk thru. My arrow popped off 2 times and the blades came open atleast 3 times...all in 4 hours!
I prefer the Montecs.

I wouldn't be tuning my bow differently for the different heads. It's just the the mechanicals are a little more forgiving of an untuned bow. Tuned right you should be able to have the Tekkan's, Montecs and field points hitting the same (or very close) place. Personally I don't see the need to carry 2 different types of BH's for different hunting scenarious. I feel perfectly happy shooting a Montec into any critter in north america and if it is within my effective range be it 20 or 60 yards I don't feel I would have an advantage shooting the mechanical for longer shots. If your BH's group well at thirty they won't get all wonky on you at 40 or 50. I know on 20 yard shots if my arrows are flying right or not.

TRA, like youngblood, i'm an eastern (TN) transplant...the hunting can be tough out here, but it's ahellofalot more exciting than sitting in a tree all day. Best of luck this year.

This is not meant to be sarcastic(ya, I know) but.... if you're patient and disciplined, good shot placement will cure most any broadhead weakness. I've tracked way too many pigs at night in thick brush, and seen more than one lost(including my own!) when the shot wasn't perfect. I'm not pointing fingers cause I've missed the mark myself, I'm simply sayin' you can get lost in the specs/techs and forget about patience. just my
