So my dad finally drew an elk tag, La Panza period 2 Bull. (max points)

We know the area is mostly private. We have a couple options already, but would like to hear about any suggestions on where others have hunted with this tag. Any and all info is appreciated. We plan on going unguided, although a trespass fee type situation would be fine.

Make sure you go to the orientation. They draw 2 lucky hunters to hunt on ranches in the area. There are a lot of ranches that will let you hunt for a trespass fee. You might get the info with your tag. Good luck.

I was born and raised in atascadero (recently had to move), there is herds scattered around pozo and the carrizzo plains area, they are rarely on public land. In that area I think your best bet would be blm in carrizo plains if you want to go unguided. I dont know of any ranches off hand that will welcome a tresspass fee I do know of a few however that sell their own tags for guided hunts. Im not too familiar with coalinga though, idk if the herds travel blm more out there. I know the hunt area is pretty good sized but theres a little info on a small portion. Good luck

There also quite a few antelope out in the plains, ranchers have trouble keeping fences up with elk and antelope taking them down.

My friend and his dad got drawn awhile back for this hunt and my friend was one of the lucky ones that drew the card out of the hat to hunt on a different ranch, so i would definitely go to the orientation to see if your lucky enough to get drawn. He ended up getting a nice 7x6 bull and his dad had a chance on public land but missed. I know on the opener there was a few people that paided the big money to hunt on the ranch next to the public where all the elk sit and my friends dad was on public and as soon as the elk were shot on private they came over to the public land and that's when he had a chance but missed. So its a crap shoot. Goodluck

thanks for all the info! any idea on when the orientation is? a poster on another site said its the friday before the hunt? Didn't make sense to have it that close to the opening day. we might have some private land to hunt where Ive seen bulls before. Would be nice to know all of our options a little further out than a couple days.

Orientation is usually the night before the opener, at least it was for my tule elk hunt in Bishop in '96. Have you contacted the biologist yet? He will probably shed more light on it for you, they were very helpful for my elk hunt
