I loaded up and headed to Laguna Mountain last night. Got to the campsite around 9:30 pm in the continuous rain and slept in the truck. I picked a boulder outcropping on the side of a ridge on the West side of Laguna Mountain closer to Sweetwater than Laguna to post up and wait for pigs to come bed down. I saw two separate deer, both does walk 50 yards in front of me and off into the thicker brush around 6:15 am. Too bad no hogs ever came in my line of sight. Around 8:00 am I hiked into the valley down below to try and spot-and-stalk them in the brush. I saw lots of sign, droppings, wallows, rubbings on trees, etc, but no hogs. There were also dozens of quail flying and running around and I also had 6 turkeys feeding in the valley below me roughly 100 yards away.
After another 3 hours of tromping through the thick cover, I headed back to the truck for a nap until around 2:30 when I woke up and hiked a few miles to a different location which overlooked some great pig habitat and where I had seen pig sign. All I saw was a bobcat and I heard boars squealing way off in the distance but they were so far away I didn’t want to stalk them as I’m sure they were on the move. I’m also sure the several groups of quail hunters throughout the area I was in didn’t do much for the pig hunting. Final report: dozens of quail spotted, 6 turkeys, 2 deer, 1 bobcat and tons of pig and coyote sign. The weather was highly foggy and around 55 degrees in the morning and low 60’s in the afternoon.
