hdsts,
If you mean Lake Cachuma near Santa Barbara, the only pigs I ever see are on the Private Ranches and they do not allow any hunting.

There is one certain area that is public. The rest is private and there are area's were you can pay to hunt pigs. There's also pigs on Highway 1 were you can pay to hunt pigs. Good luck

The area around Lake Cachuma is a County Park where hunting is strictly forbidden, and the only public land open to hunting is the nearby Los Padres National Forest. The Los Padres are not known for easy pig hunting, as the pigs are transitory and nocturnal. There are alot of wild pigs on the private ranches and you can even see a few big bruisers in the alfapha fields along the highway, but all it will do is get you frustrated.
As to the pay to play spots, pick up any outdoor publication and you will find plenty of them advertising there. If you really want to get into lots of pigs with a reasonably high success rate check, out Parkfield and the hunting guides in that area. They are reputable and have been in business for many years. Besides, there are more pigs up there than all of us at JHO could ever take...

Easymoney is correct. The nearest place to hunt is the National Forest up high. Funnything is though few years back, i think in 98' or 99', I was up off of Happy Canyon road and at the canyon where people target shoot at is an old barbed wire fence. On this fence the day I was up there was the hide of a nice sized pig. I was really surprised. No telling if whoever got it had taken it in the forest or had poached it down low and taken it up higher to work on it. But it makes you think. And i've been told there are places off of hwy 166 that holds pigs in the National forest. But that the only way to get to the spots where the pigs are is by hiking way in or going in by horse back. I don't know how true this is. But hey, anything is possible I guess.

Calijeep,
You can see pigs along Hwy 166 sometimes. There was a vehicle vs pig accident several years ago involving a huge boar. Wrecked the jeep ...
As with all public hunting spots, the game is where you find them on that day. Sometimes, sometimes not.
If I were just getting started and wanted to have a successful hunt, I would book a hunt with a reputable guide, learn the game and country, then try it on my own. Money well spent...

The temptation to stop and try to score on the deer or pigs visible from hwy 154 on the private ranches is futile... Take out your camera and just be glad you saw anything at all.

A guy I work with kills a bunch of pigs via hwy 166 I believe he goes up to rockfront ranch and takes the road as far as it will allow a 4wd to go then hikes in from there. He has showen me pictures of some large hogs he has taken. He only hunts with a traditional muzzeloader.

As far as Public Land around lake cuchuma. There are Hogs that can be hunted from public land. On the right days and time you can expect to see hogs in Los Padres National Forest off of Paradise Road. Some people have taken hogs there. Like I said only on certain days. That's all the information I can give. Good Luck.

You said it easy! Pig versus Jeep, the two guys were Pismo Police Officers oming back from a Hog Hunting trip out there. The accident messed those guys up pretty bad too but they cheated death to go on and chase more bad guys after a very long recovery!

I was heading over to D9 2 years ago and had a huge herd on the side of the road at dusk. I almost drilled a nice one standing not 5 feet from my drivers side window but decided I didn't have the time to run him back to town to hang him in the locker so I let him live. There were easily 25 pigs in that herd!

Happy New Year, Treedoc...
Yeah, I too see them all the time.
I have been lucky, I haven't hit a pig with my truck yet, but I have nailed several deer driving the back roads in the low light on the way to job sites.
