Took my buddy up to the ranch this morning, arriving around 7. We started walking the valley when I noticed some fresh rooting on one side, so we headed that way and started slowly walking up the hillside. We followed the rooting around a rise with me in front, as I rounded the rise I spotted a pair of pigs about 40 yards ahead at the top of the hill. One had it's head down, but the other was looking straight at me. I froze and had my friend do the same, and after about 30 seconds the pig dropped it's head and moved to the left. I got my friend set up in front of me with his rifle on shooting sticks, waiting for the head-down hog to move a bit as it wasn't fully visible. On the way up I'd told him a few tips, including to a) relax before shooting so you don't get wound up and jerk the trigger, and b) if you see several hogs just focus on one. Both worked as soon about four pigs came into full sight, all with their heads down. My buddy picked a nice sow and dropped her in the spot with a nice shot from his -06. The rest of the hogs took off with a couple running no more than 20 yards from us. Total hunt time: 25 minutes!
I got the quad and dragged her to the truck where with a bit of guidance my friend somewhat reluctantly field dressed and skinned her. 155 lb sow, nice and fat. Great to share my friend's first harvest, and a lot of fun to "blood" him, something I'd done for his son on a duck hunting trip two years before. The only thing I find more enjoyable than getting my own animal now is helping someone get their first. View attachment 87451
