I hunted both Sat and Sun mornings, and saw nothing. I was in there by headlamp and was ready before first light. Just cuz my cam gets them doesn't mean I will!

I here ya, I walked in under my lamp on Saturday but did not get to the bedding area i wanted to check out too early because i was hoping to catch them napping. I am going back up this friday-Sunday because it will be my last chance this year to hunt the lake. My only dilemma is whether or not to take my boat or stick to where I have spotted them.

I've always wanted to set out a cam there but I've only done day hunts there. After seeing this I might go out this Thursday.

The thing about a camera is that you have to go back and retrieve it. Mine is there now, in a new location. I go get it Thur or Fri.

Congrats!

It appears you shot it in the "double lung" area? Was the shield on that hog not too thick, thus allowing you to get good penetration?

That is one thing I want to try and figure out, that way when the oppurtunity presents itself I want to know if a double lung/heart shot would be ok or if I should wait for a 1/4 away shot.

I would wait for the quarter shot on a boar over 125 ish but I've shot sows and young boars right in the shoulder and had short wide bloodtrails. not much shield on those guys. gota try to go one more time before closing this economy has been tough one LS hunt this year record low :(

Hi JNDEER, Ive had great results with broadside shots , i dont worry about the size of the pigs unless its a boar approaching 180 and up because I use a speed bow at 70lbs and 30.5 draw length and a crossbow at 175 lbs! I also take my shots at 25 yards and closer. In my opinion i think you should shoot at whatever presents itself that way you can figure out what you and your equipment are capable of and the results of hitting pigs in different locations. 90% of my pigs drop within 70 yards of where i shoot them regardless of broadside or quartering away. I have some pictures of big pigs and thier shields that i can post up if you want

Good luck!

What WM says makes sense with regards to taking shots and learning what your equipment is capable of. I'm at the beginning stages of that learning curve. In addition, when it comes to taking a shot, the hogs don't often offer you much. When I got my chance last week they were in perfect postions and at 20 yds. By the time I was nocked up and drawn they were running away at 30 yds. I got lucky and hit a major artery near the spine. I saw lots of blood right away. It rolled downhill farther than it could run!
A week before I missed a 40 yd broadside standing still. Those were 10 yds away at first, but it's hard to shoot them with no arrow nocked! They're on you that quick.
Since then I've been practicing my "quick draw." The time it takes you to get an arrow out of the quiver, on the string and drawn is the diff between getting a shot off, or standing there shaking w/o ever having let fly.
I'm also now nocking up if I'm standing in a spot for a bit. I don't normally walk around nocked up, unless I'm on high alert!
I have seen one boar this year that was easily over 200 lbs. I got a real good look at him. A critter like him, I'd only shoot if offered the perfect close up shot. He looked like a tank! Right by Group Camp in the middle of the day. You never know...
