Finding info on Lake Sonoma is proving to be a bit difficult. I understand where it is legal to hunt and when, but what about the other regs?

Do i need a permit or something to hunt there this weekend? How do i get a campsite and reserve it?

I know there's other folks going there this weekend for the opening of the season there. Will the rain affect hunting? Anybody care to meet up with my buddy and i to kinda show us the ropes?

Thanks!

welcome to the site!Yes you need to register and get a hunt card so you will need to go early friday if you can.You shouldnt need to worry about reserving a camp ground the weather is gonna keep alot of people away this weekend. If the rain is light and stops the hogs will want to root in the soft ground but if it poors all day they will probably hold tight in the thick stuff.Thats about all I really know hope it helps a little

Hmm, ok. So i don't need to be picked in a drawing for pig hunting, right?

I have a tag and license. Can i get registered over the phone or do so on Sat morning at the crack of dawn?

Thanks again!

There is a sticky note at the top of the Hog Forum here from Ranger Joel that has all the information you need for Lake Sonoma in that note. It's at the top of the page.

Iam planning on heading out to lake Sonoma this weekend with a buddy. iam hunting although he is not. does he have to be registered. he does not have a hunting license nor does he have a bow. he would just like to come along to learn and experience a hunt. I would like to find out before we get out there and find out he must register first and the check in aint open yet.

Bad weekend to be heading up to Sonoma if you never hunted there before.
But there's a 1st time for everyone.

Nikola:

Your non-hunting buddy doesn't have to register. The park is open to fishermen, hikers, mountainbikers, etc. As long as he doesn't have a bow or shotgun in his hand, he would be fine. First-time hunters need to register in person at the visitor center and get a packet of info. Call ahead to find out what time they will be there.

LD mentioned that this will not be a good weekend for hunting at Lake Sonoma because it is the first weekend that shotguns will be allowed in a part of the area. If you were planning on bowhunting the area southeast of Rockpile Road, you'll be surrounded by people with slug guns. There's plenty of space in other areas for bowhunters.

If you are bowhunting stay away from the Yorty creek area that will be open for slugs. Kinda scary to think of such a small area being loaded with guns. The other half of yorty creek is only accessible by boat unless you feel like going for a really really long walk around the lake. I really don't see this increasing the success rate either.

I was out there a week or two ago and spotted a really nice boar, 3 sows and a few pigletts but they beat me to the fence line before I could head them off.

Good luck, its an awsome place.
