A neighbor of mine, a retired police Lt. from Sacramento, found out that I like to hunt pigs. He brought me up to a little ranch [5 acres] only 10 minutes from my house where a good friend of his lives. The home is really beautiful and the guy who lives there is growing all sorts of tropical plants [legal ones] which are expensive and hard to replace. The pigs are coming in from the surrounding brush and tearing his place apart almost every night. We also have been experiencing a drought on this side of the island so the pigs rip apart irrigation pipes to get to the water. Among the unwanted guests are 4 very large boars that travel together, which seems odd from my experience. The guy wasn't home so my friend and I roamed around and, indeed, the place is getting torn up. Alongside his property are tall reeds and I found numerous trails and bedding areas. Some of the tracks are really huge, so I imagine the boars are as he said they were, monsters.
Anyway, the guy just called me and asked me---no, actually he begged me---to come up ASAP and do what I could to get rid of them. They were on his property when he called, about 6 PM local time with another 45 minutes of shooting light. I told him I would bring my archery gear up tomorrow [Tuesday] at about 5 PM. He was elated and asked me what I charge for hunting the pigs, but before I could recover from the shock of his question and respond, he assured me that money was no object and he'd pay whatever I charged.
Can you guys in CA believe that? How much I charge? I about wet myself. This place is like Africa in the 1920's.
According to the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Wildlife Division, there are more than 5000 pigs on Hualalai Mountain, on the lower slopes of which my wife and I live. They are everywhere and they tear the holy heck out of everything. I don't imagine my odds on any one evening are really good, but I would imagine over the course of a few weeks, maybe going up there every other day, I'll nail one or two. And once the word gets out that I'm THE MAN---but I'm getting ahead of myself.
You guys have gotta come over and check this place out. I'll keep you posted.
