As it stands right now, non lead ammunition will be required as of 1 January 2008 at Vandenberg for rifle, shotgun and muzzleloaders. This ban will follow the California law and further remember that rimfire isn't allowed at all on the base for hunting, nor are handguns.

Yeah, I can't tell you how thrilled I am.

We just placed an order for Barnes loads for several rifle calibers, 12 gauge shotgun, and muzzleloader bullets. By the first, the Rod and Gun Club should be stocked up. I also ordered some SSS bullets for reloaders.

Have opened up hunting there yet for all DOD personnel yet ?? I know it was military, retired mil. and civ. personnel who worked on the base only. There was talk of opening it up to all DOD personnel or even to everyone..

I'll be there this weekend with a few buddies. Camped in the area 4 campground. Might run into some members on here. I'll be the one with the weimaraner stuck to my side. LOL

The lead ban has been put on hold at Vandenberg. No condors have been seen there so far. That's what I heard at the gunclub last saturday.

Really, 1st of Jan and not 1 July? I called the check station about 2 months ago and got "What Lead Ban?"

On a side note, went to Bass Pro this weekend and didn't see any " lead free" ammo there, other than for muzzleloader. Talked to another customer and got the same response, "lead ban?"

As to the lead ban, it's now up in the air; one says yes, the other says no. I am going on the assumption that it is not banned until July, now.

PBRDOG, sorry I missed you; was in Arizona 'til Sunday. Did you see anything? My hunting buddies got on some little ones but decided to pass on shooting them. We went out on Monday and he briefly spotted a monster boar that we have been working, but no shot.
