It is confusing but area 29 and 13E is are walk-in areas, that allow muzzleloader/shotgun with slugs.

When they say shotguns no slugs, they're talking about bird hunting, not big game.

I always call if I have a question, although it sometimes very difficult to get someone to answer the phone.

NO SLUGS AT ALL WHATSOEVER!!!! There are no nontoxic slugs: you can shoot sabots. Please keep the nomenclature correct as people mistake one for the other and then get in trouble.

410 is correct in the sense that there are no lead-free rifled slugs currently on the market for use in smoothbore shot guns. Matter of fact, lead isn't allowed period on FHL, slugs, shot or otherwise. Sabots are slugs with a plastic "cradle" that grips rifling in rifled shotguns. They're available both lead-free and leaded.

To my knowledge, there are only 3 lead-free sabot/slugs approved in CA, Federl/Barnes, Winchester's XP3s and Remington Copper Solids. Each shoots to a different point of impact and its best to try them and see what your shotgun likes.

Can you use Sabots in a smoothbore? Yes, with a full choke. Is it accurate? Not really much use beyond, say 50 yds, if that.

What are your options? 1) get a shotgun with a fully rifled barrel 2) Get a rifled barrel for your current shotgun, if available 3) Some shotguns benefit from a screw in rifled choke tube that improves accuracy some. 4) Use a muzzleloader with lead-free ammo or just don't hunt those 2 areas on FHL.

When I hunt the military bases, I bring everything, rifle bow, muzzle loader and shotgun. You never know where the animals are gonna be.

Hope that helps.

Exactly so, what Dan said. I too carry weapons with me at all times on VAFB, but usually just a muzzleloader and a bow. The m/l can do just fine for a rifle area. Just don't miss........

OK just got some in today. Federal Vital ShocK 2 3/4 3/4 0z Magnum.

Only problem is they state they are for thin skined animals such as Whitetail. How are these going to perform on pigs?
