Leesburg girl attacked by alligator, saved by father

The Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. - A Leesburg man saved his 10-year-old daughter from an alligator that bit her leg in the Withlacoochee River in central Florida.

Megan Roe was listed in stable condition this morning at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children & Women.

When the alligator attacked, her father jumped in the water, grabbed it, and poked it in the eye to free the girl.

Megan had been floating on a rubber raft Saturday and looked like a rival alligator from underwater, said Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials.

The male alligator, who was killed by wildlife officials after the attack, was likely defending it's territory near Hog Island in Sumpter County, they said.

"If you are attacked by an alligator, the best thing to do is to put up a fight," said Joy Hill, spokeswoman for the commission.
