I'm hoping someone can email me a name and or website of a quality outfitter for 2008 rifle elk hunt.
I'm trying to keep the hunt under $6k including trophy fees if possible. The hunt can be in NM, WY doesn't matter.

Thanks,

Rich

Do you happen to have any elk points for Oregon? Well if you don't that is okay, we just landed some outfitter tags for non-resident hunters, in the Snake River unit.

The Snake is our best elk hunting area. We had a great rifle season in there last year. It is rugged country to say the least. But there is a lot of animals in there.

For our guided hunts, we pack you into a nice camp, we have cook tent, and sleeping tent. Our cook is probably the best wilderness dutch oven cook that I've ever been around. We have riding horses in camp, and pack horses ready to haul elk.

I would like to talk to you, if you are interested, feel free to call me anytime.

Arrowslinger, myself, and a few other notable guys have used Del Sol Wilderness Adventures in the past. South Cox and Cameron Hanes to name a couple.

Hope to hear from you.

Here is a thread from last years rifle elk hunt. 2 bulls killed, 11 shots fired. All shots were fired at 5X5s or better. Spike was taken on the last day of the hunt, and 6X6 was taken on the third day of the hunt. But that was after 6 shots were fired the first 2 days.

Ironworker,
If your interested in Montana, check out Broken Arrow Lodge. They have guided, unguided dropcamp and lodge hunts and are not bank breakers.Did a drop camp on the opener this last season, was real happy with them. The guided hunts did real well on the opening week(100%) when we were there.Sherry and Erwin Clark are the names of the owners, saw them at the ISE show last weekend and booked an 09' Archery hunt......
Let me know if you want a Phone# or look them up on their website....

Hey Shay,

great pics and excellent story...u seem to really now the bulls there in OR. If you don't mind my asking when do the bulls in OR start the rut? or when would it be a good time to get an out of state tag to hunt the elk up there? i may have a chance at hunting a friends piece of private land this year and was just wondering which would be the best time to hunt? i was thinking the archery season, but would love to hear your recommendations??

thanks,
josh

Josh-
Funny you asked about the rut. On our November guided rifle hunt, I saw a rut frenzy like no other. I don't know why, or what caused it to happen so late. There was an 80K fire a couple of months earlier, and I just wonder if the majority of the cows did not get bred. Thus coming in a month or so later in early November. But nonetheless, it was crazy. I don't expect that this year, but you never know.

In Oregon, I think the later in Sept. The better. However, my good friend on the coast hunts Rosies, and he hits them really hard in late August, and has great success with them rutting early. I guess it all depends. But for me, if I had one week or 10 days to hunt elk. I would pick the last days in September. Good for us this year, is that the season starts later in August, and ends one week later in September than in 07'. Just the way the calendar falls this year.

Hope this helps,

Ironworker, I haven't hunted with the guys in Oregon, but the info is coming from some folks I trust. Sounds like a good operation, and one I'd book with if I had the spare change right now.

If OR isn't your cup of tea, for whatever reason, I have someone in CO who does a decent operation. First rifle season is best (actually, muzzleloader season is best), but you can do OTC for second, third and sometimes fourth season (weather dependent).

I didn't have a great time with him this past year during archery, as the "back-up" guide I got stuck with after the main guide got hurt, was pretty much a loser, Still, the outfitter took it to heart and hooked me up for 2009 (my choice...could've been 2008 if I wanted). That says a lot to me, because he didn't have to do anything. Odds are real good you won't find this "backup" guide working for him any more either.

Take a look at Dark Timber Outfitters, and if it looks interesting, drop me an email.

I just got the word, that for you out of staters. That we landed some great elk and deer outfitter tags for 2008. Meaning, simply, NO APPLICATION and NO DRAW hassles. Ready to roll !

The hunt can be in NM, WY...[/b]

I know Jim personally--done business with him a number of times. He is a straight-shooter and he can set you up with a great guided hunt in NM that fits your budget and the type of hunt you want to do. http://www.newmexicobiggamehunting.com/

Given your budget, you can purchase landowner tags if you don't draw in NM for a real good unit....In wyo, it's a draw only situation.

Only done DIY in Wyo so I can't speak from first-hand experience with outfitters there.

Ironworker......can't wait to hear about your hunt! The country you'll be in is absolutely incredible...here's a link to a fall trip Shay and myself took up there in August of '06 w/ Del Sol, you'll get a good idea of the country.....click HERE.

This is an great place to hunt and live you won't want to leave....The Battle Creek Fire might hold some good animals...I spent over a month on that fire this summer it is great country by steep as hell and hot during the summer (hence hells canyon). When they were doing the daily helicopter flights they saw lots and lots of elk along with deer, bear, goats, and sheep. We saw the elk move right back into the burn as soon as we would put it out....

Spoke with Shay earlier today and it sounds like we scored the two outfitter tags needed to get on the hunt.

Hopefully everything will be final before the weekends over.

Rich,

I'm glad it all worked out, we've been working on these tags for awhile now. The timing couldn't have been more perfect. We will have a great time in there. This country holds some elk for sure.
