I have a couple areas in colorado I have been successful in for some years. Looking for a guy or two that wants to learn my areas. Or I'm more than happy to hunt your successful areas. I have been successful the last two years in a new area and still don't have it anywhere near wired. 4x4 back into a main camp and weather permitting spike camp. Ride horses to get back in and take out animals boned out (my defination of an easy laid back hunt). Don't need lots of crap just good gear to stay dry and warm in (unless you want to get fancy thats up to you). Its a low budget hunt that can be done way under $1000.00 including and depending upon what tags you want (second season over the counter bull tags or draw out leftover discount cow tags a $250.00 ASAP). I have one buddy that wants to come however he probably won't leave base camp (limiting successful options). I'm 46 tall guy in shape, so as you see its not an impossible hunt. Regardless and especially if your anywhere near my age you must be in shape (I'm tired of babysitting). I'm in California and may be open to transporting with others. If it works out make it an annual thing and really get this area wired!

Sounds tempting! I realize the importance of being in good shape in order to get away from to ATV crown has much has possible. I don't know if i qualify anymore about being in shape . What would a good working definition be? Would it be can a hunter cover 10 miles a day up steep terrain ( I have been in the San Juan National Forest near Durango which is not rolling foothills) with a 50lp backpack? I heard some archers prefer traditional bows over compound bows because they weigh less and are easier to use in close heavy cover but one needs strong arms and back to use them. Archery Talk is also a good site to recruit hunting buddies assuming of course that you are archery hunting.

Guys it all depends upon the tag/season choice.
Ano, If your a tri athlete your fine for climbing the mountain. Frankly I am tired of babysitting newbies, that being said if your a deer hunter or if you warm up on early california "A" zone you will know enough for a laid back successful cow hunt. Honestly you need a couple warm up seasons to be successful in colorado over the counter bull or just lucky.
Lefty, frankly I cannot pack 50 lbs at altitude uphill.............downhill thats another story. Horses will do most the work. If your willing to walk with a light pack for 5 to 10 miles (hopefully down the mountain) while your horse carries your elk your good to go. BTW I'm talking gun season.
Keep in mind guys depending upon the unit most flexable tags have already been drawn out (anyelk), so now its either leftover cow tags or over the counter bull. The cow hunt is no doubt best for your first year there, very laid back (lots of animals) and low cost (half price cow tags).

I know how to ride and care for the horses. But unfortunately, I am a newbie. I have not hunted deer yet. I am looking into giving it a try this year, once I learn how to go about it...
