My son turns 12 this April and I told him I would take him on a pig hunt for his birthday. Any suggestions for a place/guide to take a kid out on his first big game hunt?
Give Tom a Call, I went on my first Hog hunt with Tom and his Son back in 05. They are both really good.

Call Casey Stafford at CICC outdoors. They guarantee an opportunity at a hog. They hunt out of the Maxwell area.
I am about to go on my second hunt with Ernie Sanders at D and E Guide Service in Middletown. He is good too. Hard core but a a little expensive. He charges 500 for the hunt and 150 if you kill one.
But he does ALL the work. You will be treated like a king and all you have to do is place the shot correctly. He will skin it and clean it while you kick back and relax.
Thanks. All hunts I've looked so far are $600. What gets me is a couple are $600 for one day! I can see getting a hog on the first day of a two day hunt, but man, one day. Seems steep.
My son turns twelve next month and I made the same promise. I had planned on doign the JHO Tejon hunt in April and well we know what happened with that... I was tunred on to Nolan Twisselmans ranch in Santa Margarita.
If you like feel free to call me at 510 385- 0652 and I'll be happy to share my 13 year old daughters pig hunt with you. Might help with your decision.
I second that Opinion. I have hunted with Tom since the eighty's and you will go home with hogs no question about it
I have taken my sons on there first hog hunt with tom and they said that they wouldn't hunt with anyone else.

Parrey from just for hunting gave away that hunt for my nephew last year. We struck out the first time, and he's having us back to get Zach a hog. I'm not sure what his price is, but as far as a guide goes, I can't imagine somebody better. His properties are gigantic, He's real kid friendly, and even if you don't get one you'll still have a hell of a time. Plus he's donated hog hunts here so it would be a great way to show gratitude for that.
My son just turned 12 as well and we are going to give FHL a try in a couple of weeks. It is certainly cheaper allthough your odds are not as good as with a guide. Besides it will be fun hiking around with the boy and a dead pig would be awesome to top off the trip.
I was looking for a hunt up north near Redding and found this guy, http://www.spencerreno.com .
Haven't hunted with him , but on his web page has a Father/son hunt for fair price. May want to check it out. Mark.
I also endorse Tom Willoughby and his son Blake as a great first time young hunter experience. I think for any first time hunter opportunity that you speak with the guide prior to the hunt to establish the type of experience you're looking for your son or daughter. In my case I informed Tom that this was my son's first time hunting big game and that I wanted a no pressure experience - he was going to get paid whether my son came home with a hog or not. I can't say enough on the experience Tom and Blake provided. In the end my son had a great time, and also came home with the bacon.
Are you planning on hunting as well or is it just your son? If both of you are hunting I would go with Lockwood Hunting Serivices. Tim's show price from the Sac ISE was $550 as long as there is two hunters. Our group of four hunters all tagged out when we went over the Memorial Day weekend last year. His property is in N. Cal.
Bill Burrows would give you and your son a wonderful experience. He is in Red Bluff. He is pricey but you get fed well, your own cabin to stay in and a video of your hunt done. pretty cool for you and your boys first pig hunt. My son and I still watch his and that was 6 years ago.
I've hunted hogs all up and down this state. Tom Willoughby is great choice (IMO). You will have to drive, but he has access to some prime ranches. Since you are in Nor Cal, I would check out Bill Burrows. Bill's ranch backs up to the ranch I hunt and he has plenty of hogs. In fact, I can glass up hogs on his ranch anytime during the day. He offers a great deal if you can get 3 confirmed hunters on the trip. I spoke with him at the gate last June and I'm pretty sure he's $650 pp. That includes 3 days of pig hunting, lodging and full meals. By the time you throw in hotel fees and food, your trip can easily approach $1,000 with most guides.
