Hi all,

I am thinking about getting a digital SLR. I think I have honed it down to the Nikon D40x. I can't tell you why, but just that seems to be the most reccomended camera to me by various shops. Be sure to chime in with your thoughts. It will just be a family type camera where we take photos of family events, family vacations, hunting and fishing trips. Nothing profesional.

Also, does anyone know of a place that sells refurbished digital cameras? Whats your thoughts on this. Thanks.

If you just want to take "snap-shot's" a dslr is not for you, they can become very expensive.

You might want to buy an inexpensive "point & shoot" camera, see how you like it, and if photography is something you are really interested in... then consider a dslr. Also, there are a lot of photography site's out there, check out photographyreview.com for some good info.

Yeah, I have a couple point and shoots. I also have a film SLR camera. I really like them, but don't really need a professional grade camera. I am wanting a slr and just figured I'd step into the digital world with them.

I recently bought the Oympus E500 with two lenses. I am very pleased with it as an entry level dslr. Was only $650 at Best Buy.

Have you checked ebay for any deals? You might also want to check the classified section of fredmiranda.com (you may need to pay something like $5.00 to view that section).

edit- btw, B&H Photo sells refurbished photography gear with a condition rating (what condition the equipment is in).

Second the recommendation on B&H photo. Having bought stuff from Ritz, Adorama, and B&H, I now stick with B&H.

I have a Nikon D70 and like it a lot. I did not do much in the way of comparison shopping. I found the reviews and recommendations at http://www.kenrockwell.com/index.htm accurate. Good education to be had there.

Amazon usually has good deals and you can find cameras from many of the online dealers there as well....

Good purchase....i got to this post too late...i was going to recommend getting the d40 instead of the "x" and buying the sb400 flash with the money you saved. Well if you can afford it...get it....especially for point and shoot family shots...you can point the flash up and bounce it off of the ceiling for much more natural looking flash pictures....i HIGHLY recommend it.

No complaints on the camera. Actually have owned 2 of them. You won't go wrong with Nikon.

I'd actually recommend against this....the d40x..even the d40 at 6mp is far superior to the rebel xti
