Man Paul, this is like watching a great movie and can't wait for the next episode. Hang in there, your persistance will pay off. Good luck, the break will do you good.
The break was good. Been out the last morning and evening. We are going thru a warm spell so that is really putting them back in the timber early in the am and they are coming out late in the evening. not very vocal at all.
finally got a bull talkin this morning. never saw him. I was on one ridge with trees and he was on a ridge across from me in the trees. It was late morning 8:00 am and there was no cover between the 2 ridges so i decided not to cross and take a shot at him tonight.
Paul finds elk....... Paul stalks elk.......... elk see paul.
Friday and Saturday night i got within 40-50 yards of a real nice 6x6 (330+) in thick trees/brush and got nailed by cows both times. It was almost identical each time.
Couldnt find anything sunday at all, was getting a little discouraged. Pretty sure the elk have moved out of the area i have been focusing most of my attention, into, the areas they are gonna rut. Went to an area where i did some pig hunting early summer and found them this morning. They are bugling pretty good. Blew a stalk this morning. I am begining to hate cow elk.
If there is a reason that hunters go home empty handed, it has to be cow elk. They have nailed me again and again. I will be sneaking in and can hear the bull up the hill or down the hill and i think i have plenty of space and these cows are set up like sentrys sometimes 100 to 150 yards away.
I really need a firearm
I have till the 22nd and then my 2 kids have youth rifle tags. Maybe i can live vicariously thru them.
I feel better now that they are a little more vocal. I would be thrilled now to shoot a legal bull (5 on one side or better), now that the season is drawing to a close. Oddly enuf, it seems that almost every bull i have stalked has been 330 or better. I could sure use a young stupid bull right now
I have not posted cuz it would be just a bunch of stories about near misses (I have not shot an arrow yet).
I can honestly say i am having a blast. This morning was another close call on a very small 5x4. I was even drawn back. I never got a broadside and so no shot. Tonight is my last chance and evenings have been very poor.
It has been very warm/bright during the day and they are not bugling till 7:00 pm so that leaves you 1/2 hour till dark to make something happen. I get one day off then 2 of my kids have tags for bull.
By the way in the last few days not only have i had some very close calls, i got within 15 yards of a Sow bear and 2 cubs, found a 26" winter kill mule deer buck (the best i have seen up here) and got lots of excercise.
Nope Pitdog, i havent lost no weight as I have increased my ice cream intake when i get home late at night.
