Man accused of trying to steal elk from truck

Idaho State Journal

September 24, 2004

POCATELLO - An Idaho Falls man was arrested Thursday morning for allegedly trying to steal an elk from the bed of a truck parked in the Denny's Restaurant parking lot in Chubbuck.

Thomas Pence, 42, is charged with petty theft.

At the time of the incident, the victims - a father and son - were asleep in a trailer hitched to their truck, when they heard a vehicle pull up.

Moments later, they felt the trailer shaking. It was just past 1 a.m.

When they went out to investigate, they reportedly saw Pence cutting ropes securing a large bull elk to the truck bed.

Police said the pair was passing through the Gate City with the elk, which one of them shot while archery hunting in Arizona.

End article

Petty theft? Um, I bet if you asked them boys who shot and drug that elk out what is was worth to them and you added up thier expenses it wouldn't be "Petty".

Guess that meat would be pretty rank being that they drove all the way from AZ back to Idaho with the Bull in the bed of the truck

AZ to Idaho is only 14 hours or so. At 60-70 degrees the elk shouldnt be too bad off. I dont think I would try it though.

I cant understand why the police were called. 1 am, desserted parking lot, man trying to steal my elk. The police would have got a missing person report from his family and then found his truck in the parking lot with no trace of him anywhere. At the very least they would have needed to call an ambulance to haul him off to the hospital.

DC I believe the a$$ whipping route would be the way to go. The other route would come back to bite you in the a$$. Then father and son would be spending the rest of their days with trash like they'd gotten rid of. Yep a good a$$ stomping would've done the guy some good before the law got there.

I've seen where people stuff ice/frozen 3 liter bottles down the cavity of an animal while in transit. Dont know if that does much good or not, but I assume you can probably get away with it if the temps are relatively cool.
