Man charged with murder of deerhunters

Associated Press

12/27/01

Kalamazoo, Mich. — A former military police officer and firearms instructor has been charged with two counts of open murder in the 1990 shooting deaths of two hunters.

Jeff E. Titus, 49, of Kalamazoo County’s Wakeshma Township, was arraigned last week shortly after his arrest, Capt. Larry Belen of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said.

A judge ordered Titus to be held without bond at the Kalamazoo County jail.

The bodies of James E. Bennett, 37, of Leonidas, and Douglas D. Estes, 33, of Comstock Township, were found in the Fulton State Game Area on Nov. 17, 1990, two days after the opening of deer-hunting season. Each man had been hit once in the back with a shotgun blast.

Titus lives on property that borders the game area, said Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Mike Anderson.
“We have a theory that this was territorial,” Anderson said.

Titus was initially identified as a suspect in the killings but was ruled out at one point because investigators believed he had an alibi, Anderson said.

Titus had told investigators that he was hunting elsewhere with a companion when the shootings occurred, Belen said.

Authorities have said the victims did not know each other and were not hunting together when they were killed. Their bodies were found a few feet apart, and investigators have said the men were both shot from a distance of about 20 feet.

At the time, Titus, a former military police officer with the Marines, was a sergeant and firearms instructor with the Michigan National Guard. Two days after the shootings, he told investigators that he had found the shotgun believed to have been used.
The case was reopened 22 months ago. When investigators talked again with Titus, they found this time that his alibi did not hold up, Anderson said.

There was a guy in NE Florida shooting hunters several years ago. From what the investigators could gather he'd walk up to the guys in thier stand and shoot them from very close range.

Two years ago they had the guy in jail who they suspected of doing it. He hung himself in the cell.

Glad to get those creaps out of commission.

even if they were trespassing there is no cause for that kind of behavior! Just call the cops and be done with it.

Animal rights activist have been know to do that too. A woman in England was arrested several years ago for the attempted murder of a animal researcher.
