DAMN!!!!

can i offer my best guess? i guess that someone was hunting elk without binoculars. they were using their riflescope as their optics. they see some guy on a moutainside and wanted to take a look at what he could possibly be looking at. riflescope up..along with the barrel..finger on the trigger, safety off. accidental discharge.

i see this ALL the time. i have the same habit of checking out my fellow hunters. if they are looking at something, i check them out. with my binoculars!! maybe, just maybe they are looking at game on my side of the valley. most times i go out, i will see someone look at me thru their riflescopes. i flip them the bird. if i can, i will hike across and tell them off. now i just archery hunt.

i just saw two idiots using their riflescopes instead of binoculars on that show..YUKON MEN when they were hunting caribou. morons.

I may be wrong but this story sounds a little over the edge to me. Maybe he did something stupid & shot himself in the hand & concocted the story to keep from looking stupid for shooting himself. Were the binocs damaged or any injury to his head? If not, that was some good shootin. Just sayin ! Sound reasonable???

IF anything larger than a .22 were to "hit" your hand from 30+ yards, while holding your binocs? Upon "expansion", id guess you would be dead! Now the "accidental discharge" theory, is probably the case IMO. Bullet didnt lose any velocity for expansion, and prolly left a nice powder burn, but needless, a "clean" passthru. OUCH, he should feel like an idiot for that one. I wonder if he was only scouting? with a sidearm? Either way, deep down at least he knows who the idiot is.

Since the guy was from Minnesota, I doubt it was a murder attempt. Powder burns and blast would show if it was self inflicted. I think it's a good idea to at least wear a blaze orange cap, even if not required by law... At least if somebody shoots you then, you know it's intentional :) Hope they find the idiot!

Could also be someone taking a brush shot at movement they saw without identifying what their target was. I would think an elk round would pretty much grenade a hand, if there would even be a hand left.

The question is, did the victim heard the shot? I've heard of one other incident where the hunter didn't hear any shot, but had an 06 bullet landed on his head. Luckily it only gave him an egg size bump on his head.

A distant cousin of my wife's shot and killed his own son taking a shot at moving brush. Sad. What ever happened to "Never point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot"???

thats how i see it. The Lt.Col always said... If your not ok with killing that or having that be dead.... do not point at it.!!!

well that and always treat my gun as if it is loaded. even if someone checked it right in front of me. I always check it agian. its a habit now.

I was there hunting outside of Williams, helping dad. I was just there to help, and always wore orange vest!
And the first rule of hunting, "know your target" don't guess!
