Hi,

I was drawn for the 2004 elk hunt in zone 415 in northern ca's, marble mountains. The tag is
good for either sex. Any sug's on where to hunt there for elk?

Thanks

I was deer hunting the Marbles in 02 and saw a herd of 8 cows. I didn't have a GPS, but it looks like, on my topo program, that the coordinates were N41, 29.98', and W123, 22.99. The trail there runs N and S, sort of, and at that point a creek runs alongside it, on the W side. There is an old camp just across the creek from the trail, nice spot, and I saw the elk from there as I returned in late morning from my morning hunt. There are a number of meadows along the creek. Lots of elk sign there and to the W, including plenty of rubs, so you might have a decent chance to get a bull.

Let us know how it turns out. If you need any help getting that elk out, I think I'm going to be real busy about then.

Good luck.

Cool, Thanks jmbn for the info.

Do elk stay in one area or do they do allot roaming (many miles, time of year, etc.)? I am use to white tail deer hunting.

Since the Fish and Game want you to take an elk, is the best way to find out were the herds are is to talk to the field officers in that area?

thanks,

brian

Yes they should be very helpful to you in getting info about where the elk are. I am fairly new to elk hunting but have read a fair bit and talked with lots of folks about it. From that and some experience in the woods, they do move around quite a bit. Once bumped they don't behave like deer, they may move miles and a couple of ridges/drainages away before setting back down. I guess it all depends on the area and how much land they are on to start with. I don't know anything about the area you will be hunting. Good luck though

Congrats! I would definitely talk to the F&G guys, also the Forest Service folks in Fort Jones. I've been in the big valleys in high country, but I didn't see any elk sign at all (and I was looking).
What are you going to use? - Rifle, bow, muzzleloader, pistol?
Let us know what you find out and how it goes. I didn't get drawn but I got a point, so someday.......

Hey Monsterbull,

Cool, Thanks for the info. I will check with them.

I just got a Browning ABolt SS Stalker 338 with BOSS. I am thinking of putting
a Leupold VX-III Ill 1.5-5 X 20 scope on it.

cheers

Hi,

I did not go with a guide, just headed up and hiked in about 4 miles. Hunted
hard for five days and shot a nice satellite bull about 5 miles back. I got lucking
dropping this guy in a frosted over meadow that allowed me to cool the meet down
almost like a freezer. It took about 12 hours to get the meat and my gear out.

I was hunting around Haypress (western part of the Mrbl Mnts).

Fun time, especially with those dam Mnt lions stalking you every night. We had one that
got about 40 feet above us before we spotted it. I guess they like to come in the the cow call
I had. Tracks were over my tracks every day.

There were a ton of elk back there, but the pony guides killed them out really fast. I saw only
one elk the whole time but tons of tracks.

cheers

Congrats on the bull. Sounds like a pretty healthy population of cats up there if you are seeing that many tracks and cats. Bet it makes dressing out the kill an interesting job. Cut, look around, cut some more, look around, cut ............
