That I know of you can only have a scope if you are visually impaired. And even then it is a super low power. The regs have a specific section on that. You're in for a fun, Tuff hunt good luck.
Contgrats to your uncle! See here: http://www.fgc.ca.gov/regulations/current/mammalregs.aspx#353
Basically, open or peep sights, unless he has a physical disability that prevents him from seeing the sights... see subsection k in the regs. Only if the department issues the "Disabled Muzzleloader Scope Permit" can he have a 1x scope.
We have been watching a heard up north for the past 3-4yrs and has a few really nice Bulls. But not as harsh of terrain as people make the Unit out to be. Marble Mountains area is HUGE!!! Thanks for the help with the scope.
I grew up in that wilderness. Now exactly what the area is like. I still play and hunt it every year. Good luck to you guys keep us posted on your hunt. I'll help out if I can.
I got a disabled muzzloader permit in 2010. It is a pretty easy thing. Just take the form to your eye doctor and have him fill it out and sign it. Basically if you cannot focus on the rear sight, front sight and target, you are impared and can get the permit. It only allows a 1x scope, but let me tell you that is everything. Good luck on that hunt.
