I am a father of a Marine who just returned from his second tour in Iraq. He has some out of state buddies who he went with on both tours who want to hunt hogs. It would be my son, and one or possibly two friends. I live on the central coast and they would like to hunt nearby. I understand they can hunt VAFB but they do not know the ropes and they could only get away for one weekend day and without someone knowledgable guiding them there at the base, they may not score. They themselves cannot afford to pay for a guided hunt as one is married whose family lives in NYC and he sends everything he makes, which isnt much, home. The other is from Pennsylvania and well, Marines just don't make much money. I am willing to spend money on helping them achieve their desire to hunt hogs. Is there anyone nearby in the central coast that offers discounts for guys like this? They are outstanding young men who have knowledge about hunting and are extremely responsible. I myself have hunted hogs several times locally and I'd even consider a self-guided hunt for these guys if the opportunity presented itself. I realize ranchers are not keen on people hunting their ranches, but if there is any local rancher, guide or outfitter that would allow them to hunt (i wouldnt hunt, just help locate hogs and spot) I would gladly pay a reasonable trespass fee for access. These guys have no family on the west coast and are stationed in San Diego. They really are outstanding individuals and very responsible. They also have a lot of hunting experience and I would like to see that they get to hunt. I dont mind paying for them but is there some sort of discount available or tresspass fee I could pay that would not be as much as a normal hunt? I would appreciate information if you know of such a place or deal. Thanks in advance.

centralcoaster,

If the Marines are interested in hunting hogs with dogs in Northern California, I would be happy to take them.

centralcoaster -- extend my best regards and expression of admiration for the sacrifices your son and other marines are doing overseas.

the most practical for them is VAFB as this will be just 4 hours from their station. VAFB has a website and directs the how-to's for military personnel who desires to hunt.

I don't have ready access to any place close to San Diego. However, I am certainly willing to pitch in for a guided hunt for these gentleman (heros in my opinion).

Rifleman, KevinZ. Thanks for your generous offers. They plan on coming here where I live one weekend soon, I live in Santa Maria, Ca. , not sure when but very soon. Then I am taking them hunting somewhere for one day near here one way or the other and because of their time restraints it would have to be a Saturday.
Rifleman, they unfortunatley do not have the time this go around to drive up your way, but thanks so much for offering. It sounds like it would be a blast.

Kevin, Thanks for the offer to pitch in finacially but I couldnt allow that as I am not destitue or anything I just was hoping to catch a break on the cost for these 3 Marines because as you know that would be probably $1500 bucks for one days hunt around these parts of the central coast not including tip. If thats what it costs me, then thats what it costs me. I appreciate very much the offer but am not asking for any money towards the cost and will not accept any. I am hoping some outfitter or rancher would be able to extend a discount under the circumstances or a reduced tresspass fee to hunt hogs on their ranch unguided with signed releases etc would also be great, and that is what I seek. I do appreciate all of your positive responses and your offers to help financially but that is not what I seek.

By the way. It really means a lot to servicemen/women when you all thank them for their service. They are so young and have seen so much and with all the political B.S. going on, it means something when people acknowledge their duty and thank them like you all did.

Anyhow, also thanks for the VAFB tip to Beastslayer. I think they would be apprehensive to go their without someone who knows the ropes and I was hoping for better opportunity for them to get a hog. I know nothing about hunting the base nor do they as none of us has ever been. But I hear it's pretty damn good if you can get on but with only one day to hunt and all the hoops one has to jump thru, I am not sure it would be best bet for someone on such a limited time frame.

Anyhow...thanks a lot. You guys sure are good hearted people!!

I would love to help, but my brother in-law, who's a Marine doesnt like to hunt. I know these guys are the best guys, my cousin recently also came back from Iraq, but unfornunitely he also doesnt hunt. The best place to hunt for hogs would be Vanderburg since its like 15 minutes from Santa Maria. Hey go down and check this thread out. Some of these guys on here are in the Marines and maybe they can help you out. The thread is called:
Anyone going to Vandenburg this year?
Theres a couple of guys going there this year. Maybe they can assist you guys.
Or since it's so close to your house, you can learn a few area's by reading some threads here on JHO. There was alot of information floating around on here. Maybe a little scouting will do just fine without a guide. I dont think a guide would be needed in Vanderburg since there's only a few area's. Check the area's by the beach.

Hey guys, thanks. Yes, Carl sent me the skinny on VAFB. That sounds great, especially considering it's free. Oneclearshot also gave me info. on Parkfield area self-guided that sounds great. I talked to owners and am going up this AM to check it out. Should be hunting there Oct 22, 23. Between the two places we should have places to hunt reasonably on this and future hunts. Great info by all and thanks again.

central coaster, this is bigdaddyk. I am the one in the photo on this forum with my son. Myself and another Marine have been hunting VAFB for about two years now and have taken 11 hogs out of this area. We see hogs ever trip up there. I am in the process of getting ready to move back east that is why I am not hunting up there for now. I did give Carl a whole lot of information on the where about of some hogs. If you would like I can give you some secret spots as well. I can put your son and his friends on some hogs their first morning up there. Give me a call. Carl has my numbers. Or just send me your number and I will give you a call. I would be happy to put them on Hogs. It is to bad that I am PCS'ing to Quantico in December or I would take them up there for free.

OK, guys...here's the scoop. Went and checked out a self-guided area to hunt in Parkfield. Problem was, the only day my son and his buddies can all get off together in the near future was the exact same week-end they have a large group already booked. Pass on that one for now. The VAFB hunt sounds good but because I can't get on, they want to pass on that one for another day. And two of them have never hunted for pigs before and just felt they needed someone with a little more experience to help them. Did score, though. Happened to get a call from a guide who works the Cojo Ranch. We made a deal suitable for both of us and we are going there. Cojo is South of VAFB and the hunting there is fantastic. I do appreciate the great info on VAFB and the tip about Parkfield. Hey, bigdaddy. I e-mailed you but not sure you received it.

I won't be hunting myself, just going to tag along, but I will post pics assuming success and a review upon return sometime around the end of October. Thanks all! Bob, DVD will be mailed when I get another copy from son when he shows up for hunt. Expect around end of Oct.

Well I was in the USMC, and I just finished my EAS, but here was some results from VAFB, just this year. The pig hunting is great up there if you know where to find them.

Hi Ric,
Glad you and the boys have got a couple of alternate prospects for your hunts! Lookin' forward to getting out with you guys after the first of the year, after the holidays have come and gone and the deer seasons are all finished. Don't worry about the DVD...the end of Oct. will be fine, or anytime that's good for you, my wife and I are going to Mich. the last week of Oct. to see my folks and won't be home until the 30th anyway! (my birthday) Talk to you when I return, by then you will have done your hunt and I wanna hear all the details! Until then, take care and good hunting!

... been outta town for a few days with no e-mail access....

Huntallday, those pics in the eucalytus trees and iceplant, where exactly is that ?? The only area I can think of with such trees is just north of the main base area, just up 13th St. and Washington St, north of the gym.
Which to my knowledge is a shotgun area....
but since you're holding a rifle, you must be somewhere else, and I've been scratching my head as to where that "somewhere else" is on VAFB....
maybe up further in Area 2A, where the northbound railroad tracks make that big right-hand turn toward Shuman Creek ?? I'm stumped !!

But I'm still locked on and tracking to next Friday's (the 22nd) arrival at VAFB, with bigdaddyk maps, instructions, and GPS piggie coordinates in hand !!
Area 4 here I come !!! Ya - HOO !!

Cheers,

Carl

Chuck, give me a call. I just got back afrom VA and man I saw some monter bucks. I have some stories to tell. I know that new pig hunter will get on those pigs that we left behind. I had to give him the g spot of VAFB. If we can't hunt it, someone must thin out those hogs. Good luck Carl. I know that you will see them.
