Hey all, I never see reference to meat in African safari threads. Does it go to the locals? Can you get it processed and sent home?

Are there any animals that stand out as having exceptional flavor?--or for that matter that are terrible like a fish eating bear is?

Thanks!

It will depend on the outfitter where the meat goes. We went to south africa and some of the meat was sold and some was kept for use on the ranch. Everything else went to the locals that picked it up. I some camps the game that is shot is what you eat. We ate bushbuck, giraffe, gemsbuck, kudu, impalla, and redhartbeast. It was all good but the bushbuck was the best by far. I think that sending meat home would be far to expensive and impractical. The time to ship and dealing with customs and the fish and Game would leave a sour taste in your mouth if you ever got anything that was not spoiled home.

Unfortunately you cannot take the meat back with you. Depending on where the animals are hunted the meat is either donated to the local rural people or is sold. A lot of it is also used in camp.

Eland is very popular amongst American clients and so is Kudu and Gemsbok. I guess it has a lot to do with the preparation though

Thanks guys, like I said I was just wondering because nobody seems to mention it. I figured the locals would be utilizing the meat if nothing else.

I imagine JJ will know more about this. I know importing is often a problem, particularly across foot and mouth control lines. I am sure it would be possible to at least get a fillet or two out with you. Your outfitter should be able to let you know or at least find out and make arrangements (permits etc) to take a taste with you.

I'm not sure whether it has to do with exporting meat as such - rather with importing the meat into your country.

Yupp.. it's not African law, it's US Import laws.

Everyone I've spoken to about this (including an email exchange about this very topic with JJ) indicates that it's pretty much standard to eat some in camp if you're of a mind to do so, and spread the rest to the locals. Since I'm a meat hunter and don't have a lot of use for trophies, this is one of the biggest reasons I've not made the commitment to try an African hunt... yet. It's still pretty alluring. But to spend that kind of money and time, and not fill the freezer... that's a hard one for me to justify to myself.
