Last year I picked up a Browning A-bolt synthetic stalker in .300 win mag for my present to myself. It was kinda an experiment...It was priced so cheep I couldn't pass it up, and if I ended up not liking it, I figgured I could sell it for close to what I bought it for.

Well, the thing has turned out to be quite a shooter after a year of little tweaks, loads and getting used to. The last two pigs I dropped with it were done so quickly and effortlessly I kinda suprised myself. It's just a great feeling to have a rifle, scope and load that feels so confident and comfortable.

This year...I was going to order up a new custom surfboard, but things went kinda screwy in the surf world, so mebbe next year.

This year...Taurus Tracker in .44 mag. I can't wait to sort this one out.

yup that Clark foam deal was a bummer. Sounds like you gave yourself a hell of a consolation prize. I want one of those in .41 mag.

SDHNTR--Just out of curiosity....what do you like better about the .41 over the .44?

No luck on the .41 mag tracker in this state.

It's not on the lame approved list.

a .44 is ok but the .41 is prohibited? That makes so little sense it's funny. LAME!

Bayed,
I like the .41 over the .44 as it is just a little easier to shoot in such a compact handgun. If you were hunting with it, the barrel is so short that only a very close shot would be wise. At that range I don't think an animal would be able to tell the difference between a 44 and 41. I'd just want it for a compact sidearm that does not get in the way. Skinning out a hog in the bottom of a Tejon hell hole in the pitch dark, makes a guy want a little protection. If I were going for a specific hunting revolver, yes I'd rather have the .44 mag with an 8" barrel. But for a compact backup, a .41 is just easier to handle.

The law is stupid and lame but just to explain it is not a matter of outlawing the caliber or anything like that.

Briefly, the California Handgun Safety law requires that every model of handgun sold in California pass a safety test which, I believe consists of loading the gun and dropping it on a concrete pad to make sure it doesn't inadvertently discharge. The law applies to every model which has been interpreted to require that each different caliber of similar/identical models be tested, that the same model but with different barrel lengths be each tested, that identical models but with different features (i.e. a two tone semi-auto, a stainless model and a blued steel model of the same gun) must each pass the test.

This is ridiculuous and mfrs. aren't willing to submit every single gun in their inventory to the test. Since 44 mag is a much more popular caliber than 41 mag it isn't surprising that Taurus has thought it not worth their while to submit the 41 mag version for testing. That is why it isn't approved/legal for sale in California.
