Lakers throwing caution to the wind, lashing out at lures

Lower Peninsula

SOUTHEASTERN LP

Lake St. Clair


Bass fishing has been good on Lake St. Clair, especially at the Dumping Grounds near 9-Mile Road. Anglers are casting tube jigs in white, cream, and green. Near Metro Beach, anglers are trolling crawler harnesses in 10 to 12 feet of water. The best colors combos have been gold or silver blades and red beads. Anglers are drifting perch rigs and slip bobbers in 12 feet of water. Some are anchoring in 18 to 20 feet of water in the shipping channel. Perch have been caught off the south shipping channel near the Firecracker. Boats are drifting with crawler harnesses and bottom bouncers in the Middle Channel. In the North Channel, anglers are chugging sinkers and jigs in 50 feet of water. Back-trolling with the current helps to keep your line straight. Muskies have been caught between Strawberry Island and Grassy Island. The best action is coming to anglers trolling in 13 feet of water, 4 feet down. Northern pike and panfish are hitting in Anchor Bay near Fair Haven.

Lake Orion

Fishing has been fair for bluegills and bass in the Orion area. Bass anglers on Lake Orion and Lakeville Lake are having success with spinnerbaits and tube baits. Rubber worms also are catching fish. Panfish are still hitting in the shallows and just off the breaks adjoining shallow water on most lakes in the area including Prince, Orion, Lakeville, and Stringy lakes. Trout fishing has been slow on Paint Creek.

Trenton Area

In the Detroit River, walleyes are hitting around the tip and along the east side of Celeron Island. Anglers are fishing bottom bouncers with crawlers in 12 to 14 feet of water. Perch have been caught around Stony Island on shiners fished along the weedlines. Walleyes have been taken near Ambassador Bridge. Anglers are jigging artificial brown worms on the bottom in 30 feet of water.

Monroe Area

Action has been hot and cold on Lake Erie. Fish seem to be biting one minute and shutting down the next. Walleyes were caught east of the Fermi Power Plant in 20 to 26 feet of water, in Brest Bay in 16 feet of water, and south of Stony Point in 24 feet of water. Anglers are catching fish east of Bolles Harbor along the Michigan-Ohio border in 20 feet of water in an area known as “walleye alley.” Anglers are trolling with planer boards or Dipsey Divers with harnesses, wiggle warts, stick baits, and spoons. Hot colors have been silver, chartreuse, red, silver, copper, and purple. Some perch are hitting, but perch fishing has been slow.

Coldwater Area


Bluegills are hitting in the shallows on Marble Lake, Archer Lake, Coldwater Lake, and the Randall Chain of Lakes. Bass and pike also are hitting, with several big fish being taken.

St. Joseph Area

Anglers trolling in Lake Michigan near St. Joseph have caught coho, steelhead, lake trout, and occasionally chinook salmon in 150 to 220 feet of water. Good colors have been Monkey Puke, or any other spoons in the colors of purple, green, or pink. Light numbers of steelhead have been caught off the pier. In the St. Joe River, good catches of smallmouth bass were reported between Niles and Buchanan on jigs and live bait. From Buchanan to Berrien Springs, walleyes have been caught on drifted crawlers. Anglers have found steelhead near the mouth of the creeks.

Kalamazoo Area

Bluegills are keeping angers busy on Gun, Gull, and North lakes. Most of the fish have moved off the beds and are hitting in deeper water. Leaf worms fished in 14 to 15 feet of water are taking fish. Catfish are hitting in the Kalamazoo River. Sucker minnows are producing good results.

CENTRAL LP

Saginaw Bay Area


In Saginaw Bay, anglers have caught walleyes off the Callahan Reef in 3 to 4 feet of water on crawler harnesses. Walleyes are hitting blue and silver Hot ‘N’ Tots fished in 16 to 20 feet of water near buoys A and B. Near Quanicassee, walleyes have been caught on Hot ‘N’ Tots in 10 to 12 feet of water, and perch have been taken on bottom bouncers with minnows in 10 feet of water. Small walleyes are hitting around the Charity Islands in 6 to 8 feet of water. Channel cats have been caught off the mouth of the Hot Ponds on crawlers and shrimp.

Lansing Area

Near Lansing, anglers are catching bluegills, pumpkinseed sunfish, and rock bass on leaf worms fished under bobbers. Smallmouth bass have been caught on crawlers by shore anglers in the slow waters of the Grand River near the Webber Impoundment. Walleyes have been caught below the South Lansing Dam. Catfish are hitting on frozen minnows and crawlers, and carp are hitting corn. Anglers are catching bullheads starting at dusk on pieces of bluegill. Anglers continue to catch panfish on Lake Ovid at Sleepy Hollow State Park.

Grand Haven Area

Chinook are hitting in Lake Michigan in 95 to 150 feet of water, but the fish are scattered. Perch and steelhead have been caught off both the north and south piers. At Muskegon, salmon and steelhead are hitting spoons in waters up to 360 feet deep. Trout fishing on the Muskegon River has been good, with good numbers of rainbow and brown trout in the 10- to 12-inch range caught when drifting worms or flies.

Ludington Area

Fishing on Lake Michigan has been slow at Ludington as the salmon are either north or south of the port. While some anglers are trolling between Ludington and Big Sable Point to find fish, others are catching salmon in waters 80 to 120 feet deep, closer to Pentwater

Harbor Beach Area


Salmon fishing remains pretty good on Lake Huron at Harbor Beach. Fish are hitting spoons trolled in 60 to 90 feet of water. Lake trout are everywhere; perch are starting to show up and are providing decent action. Anglers also are catching a few walleyes, especially off the breakwall in the harbor at night.

Port Huron

The St. Clair River has been producing good numbers of walleyes near the mouth of the Black River. Pink and chartreuse spoons have been the hot baits. Fish have been caught just south of Marysville when vertical jigging with a brown rubber worm or when fishing at Marine City near the drop-off using red tube baits with white tails. Water clarity is much better and levels are still up compared to last year.

NORTHWESTERN LP

Traverse City Area


Anglers are catching lake trout in both East Bay and West Bay. Fish are being caught in 120 to 140 feet of water on white spoons, Spin-N-Glows, and cowbells and peanuts. In the East Bay, whitefish are hitting spawn and wigglers in 40 to 60 feet of water. Whitefish are biting near Deepwater Point and out from Yuba Road and Dock Road in water 65 to 80 feet deep. Smallmouth bass are starting to spawn and are hitting tube jigs and spinnerbaits in both bays. At Leland, boat anglers are catching chinook and steelhead in Lake Michigan when trolling with spoons. Inland, Long Lake has fair to good catches of walleyes. Anglers on Lake Leelanau are taking walleyes and yellow perch. Good bluegill fishing has been reported on many of the area’s inland lakes.

Wellston Area

Skamania have moved into the Big Manistee River and anglers report good success. Anglers fishing crawlers and spawn report the best success, and black flies are taking good numbers of fish. Walleyes are hitting in good numbers in the backwaters above Tippy Dam. Crawler harnesses are producing good results. The hex hatch is on and stream fishing has been very good.

Beulah Area

Perch fishing has been great on Crystal and Platte lakes. Walleyes also are hitting on Crystal. ’Gills are still in the shallows and are hitting leaf worms and crickets on most inland lakes in the area. Trout fishing has been decent on area streams, but mosquitoes are thick.

Cadillac Area

Fishing is picking up in the Cadillac area. Angles are taking good numbers of crappies on minnows fished in Lake Cadillac. The best action has been at the east end of the lake in the weedbeds and the city dock. A few bass also are being caught on crawlers and leeches on both Cadillac and Lake Mitchel. Pike anglers report good action on sucker minnows and spinnerbaits on both lakes.

NORTHEASTERN LP

Harrisville Area


At Harrisville, limits of lake trout are being caught in Lake Michigan in 50 to 70 feet of water. The fish are hitting 35 to 40 feet down or near the bottom. Near Oscoda, lake trout are hitting in 70 to 80 feet of water. Fish have been caught on spoons in raspberry, yellow tail, or green with white stripes. Steelhead catches are improving, and some chinook have been caught at both ports. Hexes are hatching on the Au Sable River, and trout fishing has been good for fly-fishers.

Glennie Area

Fishing has been very good on the backwaters along the Au Sable River. Walleyes are hitting leeches and crawlers on Five Channels, Loud, and Cook ponds. Bluegill fishing also has been very good. ’Gills are in the shallows and hitting leeches and flies.Trout fishing has been good on area streams. The hex hatch is on, and water levels are stable.

Bass fishing has been pretty good on Fletcher Floodwaters. Anglers report good action on topwaters and crankbaits fished in the stump field. ’Gills, crappies, and perch are providing anglers with good action along the river bottom.

Tawas Area

Lake trout fishing has been good on Lake Huron at Tawas. Fish are being caught 55 to 75 feet down in 80 to 120 feet of water near buoys 1 and 2. A few chinook and brown trout also have been caught. Walleye fishing is fair, with the best action coming in 30 to 40 feet of water. Near Au Gres, light numbers of yellow perch are hitting minnows in 35 to 47 feet of water near the shipping channel, but anglers are having to work for them. Walleye fishing has been fair off Point Lookout, Point Au Gres, and around the Charity Islands. A few brown trout also have been caught on crawler harnesses, and channel cats are hitting in the lower section of the Au Gres River.

EASTERN UP

Cedarville Area


Herring are hitting in Lake Huron. Anglers fishing teardrops in chartreuse or orange and tipped with waxies report a good bite at Hessel and at Cedarville in Government Bay and Moscoe Bay. Pike fishing has been good around the Les Cheneaux Islands. King salmon also have moved in and anglers trolling spoons 40 to 50 feet down in 80 to 100 feet of water report a pretty good bite.

Walleyes are hitting in the shallows in Munuscong Bay and Raber Bay. The best action is coming in 3 to 4 feet of water on crawlers and leeches.

Drummond Island Area

Cisco fishing has been great with lots of fish hitting teardrops and wax worms in Maxton Bay. Walleye fishing has been pretty good in Scotts Bay. Crawler harnesses and bottom bouncers fished in 10 feet of water have been producing the best bites. Bass and pike fishing have been pretty good all around the island.

St. Ignace Area

Anglers are starting to pick up a few salmon in the Straits of Mackinac in 140 feet of water, 50 feet down. The hot color has been watermelon. Fishing has been very slow on Brevoort Lake.

CENTRAL UP

Grand Marais Area


Fishing has been slow at Grand Marais. A few bluegills are hitting in the shallows in some of the smaller lakes in the area. A few brown trout and rainbows are being caught in the Big Two-Hearted River, but overall, action has been slow and angler pressure light.

Curtis Area

Pike fishing has been good with several big fish hitting in Big Manistique Lake. Live bait fished under bobbers has been very productive. A major mayfly hatch on Big Manistique Lake has put a damper on walleye fishing. Anglers report a little better success on South Manistique, where a few walleyes are coming to the net. Leeches, crawlers, and minnows are producing, but overall, action has been slow and a lot of fish are undersized.

Marquette Area

Walleye fishing has picked up at The Hoist Basin, Lake Independence, and Goose Lake. Leeches and crawlers are both taking fish. Lake trout fishing has been phenomenal in Lake Superior. Anglers are reporting limit catches coming from 40 to 80 feet of water.

Escanaba Area

On Little Bay De Noc, high winds and mayfly hatches have kept many anglers on shore. Walleyes have been caught in the evenings just off the beach near Gladstone and near Second and Center reefs. Anglers drifting with nightcrawlers in shallow waters have been enjoying the best action. Some walleyes also are being caught by night-trolling with crankbaits in 10 to 12 feet of water. Northern pike have been caught on crankbaits and crawlers. A few walleyes have been caught in the Escanaba River, but the action has been slow. Anglers are jigging crawlers in 10 feet of water or shorefishing. In Big Bay de Noc, anglers are just starting to catch salmon near Fairport. Walleyes are hitting crankbaits in 16 to 20 feet of water in Garden Bay. Bass anglers are catching smallies on spinners and tube baits in 6 to 10 feet of water.

WESTERN UP

Bergland Area


Walleye fishing has been slow on Lake Gogebic with a heavy mayfly hatch in full bloom. Diehard anglers are catching a couple fish but action has been slow. Pike are hitting throughout the lake and anglers fishing live bait rigs report the best success. An occasional perch has been caught in Bergland Bay.

Iron River Area

Walleyes are hitting on Ottawa and Fortune lakes, but a lot of smaller fish are being caught. Muskie fishing has been hot on Chicagon Lake with several big fish being taken. ’Gills are in the shallows on most inland lakes, and anglers report good success.
