Summer fishing warming up for big salmon and walleyes

Lower Peninsula


Lake St. Clair

The mayfly hatch has slowed fishing on Lake St. Clair. Walleye fishing has been fair a couple miles out from the Harrison Township DNR launch. Anglers trolling body baits or drifting crawlers in 13 to 16 feet of water have been taking a few fish. Bass are hitting spinners and tube jigs in white, cream, or green in 6 to 8 feet of water between 8 Mile Road and Metro Beach. Perch fishing has been fair in front of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, and muskies are hitting on the northern end of the lake between Grassy Island and Strawberry Island.

Pontiac Area

Walleyes are hitting on Pontiac Lake. Jigs and golden shiners have been the hot ticket when fished in the deep holes west of the boat launch and between the two islands. Bluegills and crappies also have been active on Pontiac, Maceday, and Loon lakes.

Luna Pier Area

Fishing on Lake Erie has been spotty. East winds have been stirring up weeds in the lake, making trolling difficult. Anglers have found some fish in shallow waters off Luna Pier and north of the Sputnik. Walleyes are hitting in 16 to 18 feet of water in Brest Bay and at various depths near Fermi and Stony Point. A few large fish have been caught near West Sister Island. Hot-N-Tots and crawler harnesses in fluorescent colors have worked best. Good numbers of perch have been caught near the E-Buoy and buoys 1 and 2 in the Raisin River Channel.

Coldwater Area

On Coldwater Lake, anglers report good action for bluegills, bass, and an occasional walleye. Bluegills and bass also are hitting on the Randall Chain of Lakes, with the best action coming on the deep side of the drops.

St. Joseph Area

Early morning pier anglers have been taking good numbers of steelhead in Lake Michigan. Alewives, shrimp, and green and silver spoons have been hot. Catfish, perch, and walleyes have been caught off the piers at night. Boat anglers are taking good numbers of perch, but the fish have been on the small side. Chinook, coho, and steelhead are hitting in 75 to 120 feet of water straight out from the pier head. On the St. Joe River, good walleye fishing has been reported from Buchanan to Berrien Springs. A few steelhead have been caught on flies and crawlers. Bass have been hitting jigs and leeches.

Kalamazoo Area

Salmon fishing is picking up on Lake Michigan at South Haven in 90 feet of water. Lakers, steelies, coho, and kings all are hitting. Dodgers, and flies and spoons, both are producing, especially in green and orange. Smallmouth bass are hitting on the flats in 8 to 14 feet of water on Gull Lake. Largemouth bass are hitting on Austin Lake with Rapalas and Texas-rigged plastic worms producing good results. Crappies are attracting attention in the evenings in 14 to 18 feet of water in Pine Lake. Northern pike are hitting sucker minnows on Wolf Lake, but most are on the small side.

Saginaw Bay Area

Strong winds out of the northeast have kept many anglers from fishing on Saginaw Bay. When they can get out, anglers report good catches of walleyes near Buoy No. 1 in 22 feet of water, and off Knight Road in 6 feet of water. Body baits and crawler harnesses in black, silver, or red herringbone have been working best. Channel cats and white bass are hitting near the Hot Ponds.

Baldwin Area

Brown trout fishing has been pretty good on the Pere Marquette River. Terrestrials, especially hoppers, have been producing the best results in the evenings.

Lansing Area

Walleyes are hitting above the Lyons Dam and below the South Lansing Dam. Live bait and crankbaits both have been producing. Bass are hitting at the Webber Impoundment. Anglers are catching bluegills, smallmouth bass, and crappies off the wall near the North Lansing Dam. Catfish can be found near the fish ladder. Northern pike and bass have been caught in the Looking Glass River, and bluegills are keeping anglers busy on Lake Ovid.

Muskegon Area

Walleye fishing is heating up on Muskegon Lake. Spinners, crawlers, and leeches fished in 10 to 12 feet of water have been getting good results. Largemouth bass are hitting tubes and plastic worms along the weeds in the main lake, and smallies are hitting live baits in the Muskegon Channel. Salmon and steelhead are hitting in Lake Michigan in 90 to 100 feet of water north of the harbor. Dodgers and flies have been taking fish, and orange has been the hot color.

Ludington Area

Salmon are hitting in Lake Michigan in 90 to 200 feet of water, 45 to 75 feet down. An assortment of magnum spoons in yellow and green, and Dodgers with blue flies have been producing good results. Largemouth and smallmouth bass have been hitting leeches in Hamlin Lake. Smallies are holding in the deeper water, and largemouths are hitting off the weeds. Bluegill action has been good, but crappie fishing has been slow.

Caseville Area

Walleyes are hitting in Lake Huron off Oak Point and off Sleeper State Park in 25 to 35 feet of water. Crawlers and Hot-N-Tots both have been producing good results. Walleyes are hitting northeast of Big Charity Island at “The Steeples” and southwest of Little Charity. Perch fishing has been pretty good on the mud flats between Sand Point Buoy and North Island. Anglers fishing off the breakwall in downtown Caseville on the Pigeon River report good catfish and bass fishing.

Harbor Beach Area

On Lake Huron, from Harbor Beach to Grindstone City, chinook, steelhead, and brown trout are hitting 15 to 20 feet down in water 40 to 50 feet deep. Lake trout are hitting 30 feet down in 90 feet of water. Pier anglers are catching walleyes at night with crawler harnesses and body baits.

Cadillac Area

Panfish action has been pretty good on lakes Mitchell and Cadillac. Small jigs and minnows both have been producing good results when fished in 10 to 12 feet of water. Pike fishing has been pretty good, too. Sucker minnows and spinnerbaits are taking fish off the weeds. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are hitting, with leeches and rubber worms attracting a good amount of attention.

Grayling Area

Anglers report a pretty good bite on Lake Margrethe for walleyes and bass, and a few scattered pike. Walleyes are hitting leeches and crawler harnesses in 15 to 18 feet or water. Bass are hitting tubes and jigs in 12- to 15-foot depths. For pike, anglers are drifting large sucker minnows under bobbers. Pike and walleye fishing have been good in the “Center Grounds” on Houghton Lake.

Higgins Lake Area

Perch fishing has been pretty good on Higgins Lake. Minnows are taking fish in 35 feet of water on the west shore and over the sunken island. Lake trout are biting in 100 feet of water on cowbells and large minnows. Smallmouth bass also are hitting, with minnows and tubes both producing good results.

Hubbard Lake

Walleye fishing and perch fishing have been slow on Hubbard Lake. Bass fishing has been pretty good with smallies hitting in 18 to 20 feet of water. Tube baits and crayfish imitations have been producing the best results on the southeast side of the lake and off Churchill Point.

Oscoda Area

Lake trout fishing has been good on Lake Michigan in 80 to 120 feet of water. An occasional king is mixing in with the catch. Catfish action has been hot on the Au Sable River. Anglers are fishing crawlers on bottom off the pier heads. Walleye fishing has been decent on Van Etten Lake. The best action is coming to anglers drifting crawlers along the drops. Perch are hitting minnows in the same areas.

Tawas Area

Salmon fishing has been slow on Lake Huron. A few lake trout are hitting in 40 to 130 feet of water. Walleye fishing has been decent with a fair bite being reported by anglers fishing along the drop-off near Tawas Point. Hot-N-Tots and No. 18 Rapalas have been producing the best results.

Upper Peninsula


Pickford Area

Fishing has been pretty good around Pickford. Herring are hitting teardrops tipped with wax worms in Raber Bay. Walleyes also are active in Raber Bay with good catches being reported from anglers fishing crawler harnesses in 8 to 15 feet of water. Walleyes are hitting jigs and crawlers in Munuscong Bay. Pike and muskie fishing has been pretty good in both bays, with crankbaits and spinners taking fish.

Drummond Island Area

A few herring are hanging around in Sturgeon, Maxton, and Whitney bay, but action is winding down. Bass fishing has been hot all around the island on spinnerbaits and crawlers. A few pike are being caught on chubs and spoons. Salmon fishing has been fair around the lighthouse.

Grand Marais Area

Decent whitefish action is being reported at the mouth of the Big Two-Hearted River. An occasional steelhead also is being caught. Pike and walleyes are hitting on Bodi and Culhane lakes.

Curtis Area

Perch fishing has been pretty good on Big Manistique Lake. The best action is coming on minnows fished along the northwest side of the lake in 5 to 12 feet of water. Walleye fishing has been slow with the mayfly hatch lingering. Bluegills are on their beds on South Manistique Lake, and pike and walleye anglers there report a good bite, but mostly by undersized fish. Brook trout fishing has been good on the Fox and the Tahquamenon rivers.

Escanaba Area

Walleye fishing has been slow on Lake Michigan’s Little Bay de Noc. Smallmouth bass are hitting off the rocks south of the Ford River in 4 to 12 feet of water, and in 10 feet of water near the Days River. A few perch are being caught near the mouth of the Whitefish River in 10 to 14 feet of water.

Crystal Falls Area

Bass and walleye anglers report a good bite on Peavy Pond with leeches and crawlers attracting the most attention. Crappie action has been pretty good on Fire Lake, and bluegills are still lurking in the shallows on most inland lakes and hitting spiders and leaf worms.

Iron River Area

A few walleyes and perch have been caught on Chicagon Lake, but fishing pressure has been light. Good muskie fishing has been reported on Chicagon and Emily lakes.
