Montana elk

Me and a buddy drew a combo mule deer and general elk tag. We will be hunting the Judith River Ranch for mule deer from Nov. 13-18. As soon as we shoot our deer, I start hunting for elk, even if its before the 18th.

My buddy needs to leave and can not hunt for elk. I want to try for elk on my way back to california for 3-5 days. I will be tenting it and really have no starting point. Kind of looking at the 324-327 range near Gravelys. Not to sure.

I have never hunted Montana, but I know I am in for a true hunting experience. I have never harvested an elk and will shoot the first legal bull I see. I will be by myself, so I know my work is cut out for me.

I appreciate any and all suggestions. I know everybody searches hard for their spots, and I dont expect exact locations. Some camping areas and jump off points would be much appreciated.

Have a good hunt!! It can be extremely cold so make sure you've got the right camping equipment. I was quading in early Nov up in Wyo when it was around 0 degrees--even in heavy gear, that's awefully cold. I had to stop every few miles in on the way to my spot (10 mi) and run around to warm up! lol...

Not sure what aregion you will be in but if you can plan a day or two in Region 6, you can load up on some whitetail doe. First tag is about $75, and then you can get up to 6 other tags for $20/ea. as a non-resident....they have an over-population....call the regional office and inquire about the Block Management program.
