A couple buddy's and I drew the General Elk/Mule deer combo tag in Montana. This will be my first time hunting in montana and there second. We have general area (Beaverhead) were we will start hunting, but looking for some plan B and maybe C's. Do any of you have any suggestions on locations. Not looking for exact GPS coord, but general area would be great. Not trying to get a trouphy bull, just a nice meat bull. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advanced

I've only hunted 1 area of Montana and that is because my friend lives there. I'm pretty certain there are better areas with easier access and more elk. I've heard that the Missouri Breaks area has ample elk, but I've never hunted there.
Things to consider are: public land access (check FWP web sites), terrain (you can do a lot of scounting on Google Earth), do you need to draw for your chosen location and now you should investigate wolf impact. On FWP web site you can see the prime wolf areas. My guess is these areas and the surrounding areas hold plenty of wolves, so maybe they don't hold as many elk.
I've been cautioned that this year I may have drawn a Big Game Combo just to go camping to see wolf tracks and no elk.

I used to hunt out of Drummond (along I-90, West of Butte, East of Missoula). Some Block Management and some Forest Service land.

You can't eat the horns - shoot a cow.
