I chased this red bellied woodpecker all over trying to get a decent in-flight shot until I was pretty sure my right index finger had frostbite… this was the best I could do.

I was getting ready to take a p I c t u r e of this black-capped chickadee when this nuthatch chased it away, the nuthatch didn’t stay long.

Didn’t have time to adjust my settings when I saw this deer.

A very rare black-capped-bat chickadee enjoying some ice.

Shooting birds while out moving around, at least in my experience can be kind of tough. Most of the birds I am trying to shoot will not stick around long enough to get them in clear focus.

Some good shots there.

I love that last pic Clutch. Heck , I love all of em. How fast a shutter speed do you use when trying to get birds in flight? And, do you shoot in shutter priority or in manual?

Edit - This may be a dumb question , but I don't know how to, anyways - How do I look at the exif of your pics - so I don't keep asking all these silly questions ?

Thanks guys.

Dave, I was shooting in manual using Al Servo to focus. My ISO was pretty high at 800 except for the moon shot which has an ISO speed of 100 to limit as much visible noise as possible (the lowest ISO setting on my camera). My shutter speeds varied between 1/2500th of a sec to around 1/5000th of a sec, aperture was @ f/5.6 for all of the shots.

Al Servo is really the only way to focus on a fast moving object. The biggest draw-back to doing this is, all of your subjects will be centered in the frame. I cropped these images using the rule of thirds, which isn't good because you lose detail... same with using a high ISO speed and then doing a noise reduction.

Some people are really good at panning and using slower shutter speeds. A nice clear/sharp shot of a birds head combined with some motion blur in the wings looks awesome!

As far as looking up the exif data of someones image... I'm not sure. Hopefully someone who knows will answer. I don't mind sharing mine if anyone wants to know, unless it's a really bad pic, lol.
