I feel a little sheepish doing the mushroom thing here on the shed forum but I wouldn't be the first to do so would I? I was turkey hunting with a friend Sunday and found my first morels I ever saw. Strangely enough, I was pretty excited. There was a bunch of them growing in rotting wood debris at the base of a large, old tree along an old elevated railroad bed we use. They blended in so well I hardly saw the first one, but when I realized what it was, I immediately saw a mess of others around the immediate spot. Don't know if it was an elm or what (I'm going back). My partner told me he thought they were past prime or old or whatever so I left them. They were "tan" colored on the tops with light colored stem. How do I tell they're prime for eating or past prime? It's been warmish here and we're getting rain---will there be more coming up or is it a one shot "wham-Bam- thank- you- Mam deal for the morels? Oh yeah, I did call up a nice two year old bird for my partner which he did bag on Sat ( I try to be a good turkey hunting partner but I'm looking for sheds the whole time I'm out there).

Shaq, Don't be shy about posting morel stories here. I certainly am not. Besides you were looking for sheds at the same time. Congrats on finding some. When they are getting where they crumble easily they are not fit to eat. Good ones feel firm and have a strong oder. Enjoy!

If I were you I'd have picked those things if they were big enough.I'll bet your turkey partner headed right back to that spot after you parted with him.

If they aren't all dried up,rotten or crumble in your hands, they're good to eat.
I've found when I hunt mushrooms the majority of the mushrooms in a given area usually come up in a short period of time.I think timing has more to hitting the mushrooms then anything else.I'd be going back to that spot now!!

Hey, I'm going to go looking and may take a digital pic of them if I find em so to have you folks check them out maybe. I'm sorta nervous about not having been shown exactly if what I found is safe to eat.

Congrats on your find. We don't have them here as I have never seen them. Lots of the bad mushrooms though like the ones that grow out of a tree and when dry you can almost use them as a tree step. Wish we did have them as I love mushrooms.
