Mosin-Nagant for Pigs?

I'm planning to go on my first pig hunt (March Pig-O-Rama). I've got several choices as far as rifles go, my deer rifle (.308 with a 3x9 Redfield Scope), an 8MM Mauser (Bolt action, open sights) or a Mosin Nagant carbine 7.62X54R (Bolt Action, open sights).

What do you guys recommend? I'd like to drag out the old guns (with open sights) just for fun, especially since I hear these pigs hang out in the thick brush.

I think both the 8mm and 7.62X54R are enough gun, it's just a matter of typical shot ranges. If pigs are usually shot at greater than 100 Yds, I'd probably take the .308.

Well, all of those will do, just take what you think your best at. I personally would take the lightest gun since Boar hunting means you'll do a lot of walking and often it's hilly. Those older guns can be quite heavy after a couple of hours.

I would not subscribe to the brush gun idea much since shooting where you can't see where the bullet will end up is a bad idea.

I shoot a .308 and its plenty. Drops them hogs in there tracks. I've never hunted the Tejon Ranch, but I hear its deep canyons and very hilly. The lightest gun you have would make a big difference and if happens to be your .308 you have plenty of knockdown power. Good Luck

The cartridge will blast him just fine.
The rifle on the other hand with get heavy. Especially if you have to drag that dead porky pig up hills back to the truck.
Is it the standard lenth (as in long) M-N rifle or the handy carbine.
Question do they make hunting ammo for the Mosin?

No experience with the cartridge..but Miwall has 205gr soft points listed on their site for $4.95 a box!

tejon pig hunt tip -- find natural springs and streams, and thats where the pigs should be. like it was said before, tejon can be hilly, but the pigs will hang out in the flatlands near the trees and water and along the roads. they will usually take to the hills (up and down) when scared, they have no problem running down near cliffs, under the oak trees they will root the hell out of it up looking for food.
i would take a lightweight gun, i doubt you need the scope, since most of your shots will prolly be under 100yards, maybe under 50.
