Traxman: While I agree that "the customer is always right", I also know that sometime the customer may not be sure about 'how' he wants something done. Also, you need to make the guide understand just how 'firm' you stand on a given issue. For example, a friend of mine went on a guided hunt, and he did NOT want dogs. No hogs found the first day... He was asked if he wanted to give the dogs a try. He refused. Another half a day later (with only a few hours left from his hunt) he asked the guide to use the dogs to 'find and flush' the hogs.

Also, somewhat related, are looking at things from a business standpoint. Some operations are very pricey, and they will bend backwards.... Some are just outright FUNNY! This one guide I spoke with about 3 years ago, wanted $350 for a 'guaranteed hunt'. Only after hammering him with questions, it was revealed that the $350 is a trespass fee, so if you don't see a hog, ALL YOU PAY IS $350!!!! If you do, however, connect with one, there is a 'kill' or 'success' fee of an additional $350. That is, unless the pig weighs over 200 lbs, or has tusks that are longer than 2 inches from the gum line, in which case, an additional 'trophy fee' of $200 will apply. That is $900 for a 200lbs+ pig. And I thought that $350 was the 'no-pig-no-pay' price. In a pricey operation like this, there is a MUCH higher expectation of service (at least from me).
I had a conversation with Tom Willoughby a couple of years back (he is also a reputable and highly regarded guide), at which time, I asked about the cost of taking a second pig. Afterall, it would only make sense to get a big discount if you are there, and decide to take a second pig from a heard. His reply was very honest, and made a lot of sense..... Basically, a second pig will cost you the same as the first one! And, for a good reason. He too does not charge trophy fees, and is a guaranteed hunt. He indicated that if discounts are given for a second pig, then once you shoot your first pig, you WILL want a trophy for the second one.... Which would mean a LOT more work, for less pay, thus no discount for a second pig.

On the other end of the specturm, you have some low-cost (lower, but not all that low) operations, which are downright a joke, such as REAL SMALL fenced lots with 'farmer John', floppy eared pet pigs running around, or in one case, a guy with 40 acres (yep, 40 acres) charging $290 to hunt in his backyard! FYI: 640 acres is equal to 1mile X 1mile. 40 acres is a large backyard. Of course, unless you ask a LOT of questions, these details are not revealed.

In Frank's case, he is one of the lower cost operations, which up until now, gave nothing short of a FIRST CLASS service. All the feedback and personal experiences with him have always indicated him to cater to YOUR style of hunting, and provide a courteous, and friendly service at a reasonable cost. So in a sense, you got what the $$$ guides offered for $$. In his case, he also does not charge any 'trophy fees', which is somewhat of a double edged sword. That releaves you of having to pay extra for a NICE hog, which would be considered a trophy by others, but at the same time, it releaves him of any obligation to find you such a hog. Technically, he guarantees you a reasonable opportunity to take a hog, and if one is presented, you are obligated to pay full payment. Of course, the sooner you connect with one, the sooner he gets to go home (who wouldn't want you to 'finish work', and go home as soon as possible???).

That could (not saying that it does) explain his position of wanting to use dogs, if he suspects that you may not 'mind' using the dogs all that much. That is, maybe you don't mind hunting with dogs all that much.... Not trying to justify what he did, but CLEAR communication is the key, in my opinion.

In my case, after seeing that dogs are being used when I had requested otherwise, I would make it VERY CLEAR (but kindly, and in a friendly tone) that I am NOT interested in hunting with dogs.

Regardless of which guide you choose for future hunts, MAKE SURE that you as a LOT of questions, and that both you and the guide have a COMPLETE and THOROUGH understanding of each others expectations. This way, you can minimize the possibility of having a disaster.

How much did this hunt cost and what was supposed to be included? How many days?

Thanks for the heads up on this guy. There is no way I would ever use this guy. Yelling at customers is a big no-no to me. I don't care how many good reviews he has, yelling at people that are paying him is the nail in the coffen for me.

Thanks for the post Yotegetter, you saved me some grief. I'll see you at the POR in march for a real hunt. Please tell me you didn't tip this clown. If this had happened to me, I WOULD HAVE LOST IT!

We were in the planning stages for a guided hunt and Mustang was the top choice until now. I have met yotegetter a couple times and trust his word. I will boycot Mustang in his honor
<
! (us JHP'ers gatta stick together)

I guess I will give Tracy Norton (Bores n' More) a call.

P.S. Mustang Ranch Guide service... You just lost a Loyal party of 4 who tip BIG!

I've also been around the campfire a few times with Yotegetter and trust his word. The way I see it is, what if the guy treats 99 out of 100 guys great, and you just happen to be lucky #100. 99 great hunts aren't going to make your bad hunt any better.

I can personlly say I've hunted and fished with Yotegetter on several occasions, You can take what he says, as what it is.

Well I don't know about you guys, but it sounds like Frank was none to friendly. I spoke with Jesse (yotegetter) when he got home, and I must say, his post didn't do justice to the trip. I guess just hearing it in person it sounds worse then trying to type it. One thing that really chaps my back side is the fact that he yelled at him for chambering another round, when in my opinion is the exact RIGHT thing to do. Every thing I've ever heard, says to be ready for the follow up shot, and be ready when aproching a down animal. I personally do not unload my gun intell I know the animal is dead. Someone in franks profession, should know this. In hearing the story, it kind of sounds like Frank was just tring to get his dogs some experience, or practice.

As for being more firm or assertive. Yotegetter paid good money for the hunt, he shouldn't have to remind Frank that he didn't want dogs used. Tell him once and that's it. Why should the paying customer have to sit there and keep telling the guy over and over again.

I think yotegetter should write him a letter and tell him what the problem is, and tell him that he was very dissatisfied with the service. If Frank really was just having a bad day or weekend in this case, then I think he should invite Jesse back for an "On the house hunt" or at least a reduced rate hunt.

Good points Evan, but if I know Jesse, he has too much pride to go back. (us musicians is that way)

I think Mustang Ranch has perhaps seen it's last hunter from this forum and that will hit frank where it hurts... In the wallet! A decent hunt is worth, at the very least, a $100 tip from each hunter and an awesome experience is worth $200 per person. Add that up with the thousands who may read this thread and frank, if he’s lucky, may retire feeding chickens for a living.

Yotegetter, my hat’s off to ya for not going postal

(as I would have) on this guide. I hope his “regular client” was worth it!

You can cross 1 more hunter off Frank's list of potential customers here. Thanks for the details.

If I would have known a single hunter gets different treatment than a group of hunters, I'd a gone with another "guided" hunt. Tom Willoughby maybe, or Boaring Experiences. As for being firm and assertive, one time on the phone, one time before a hunt, and one time during the hunt? I think once is all that's necessary (as EvanIII said), wouldn't you think so? I specifically told him that I'd use the dogs ONLY if I were to wound a pig and we'd have to track him down, given the fact that I was using a .243. Someone made a comment about telling him when he released the dogs. Heck, he just stepped outside to, what seemed to me, glass around for hogs. All of a sudden, the dogs are released and off to look for pigs. There was no way those dogs were going to return. Those dogs hunt well, but don't seem to listen to their master very well. To me it seemed like Frank was accomodating more towards the other hunters. One thing that really ticked me off was that he didn't tell me he had to work on friday. Also the fact that I didn't get any help on the pig and the other guys did. The reason I just didn't leave the first day is because I did drive 5 hours and I wanted to make the best of it. It was my first guided pig hunt, but of what I've heard the way it works, it was totally different. I will write him a letter and let him know, but the damage is done. I won't go back to him even if he did offer an "on the house" hunt. By the time I've spent on food, gas, and hotel, I can go to a pig-o-rama instead and hunt with you guys that I'll enjoy hunting with. SDHunter, Hook, HogHunter714, no need for an apology. You guys had good hunts and enjoyed them. I've hunted with Hook and he's a great guy. No hard feelings with him or the others that recommended him to me. I'm not blaming anybody here, just to let you know. It's just you guys had good hunts with him. Maybe you all have hunted with him as a group and that's the way the guy gives better service. I'll now know for next time, not with Frank of course.

Yottegetter,

Glad to hear the whole story now. I remember when I was in his truck heading down to one of his ranches in San Ardo, he was "Stressing" the fact DO NOT chamber a round until he says to do so. I remember when I shot my last hog with him, I pretty much did the same thing you did and he raised his voice, but I knew it was for saftey reasons and I did what he asked. But, then here's the funny part. When I shot my hog, she wasnt dead. She was down, but not dead. So him walking up on a 270 pound PISSED OFF sow that is not a smart thing...Hows that for "SAFETY"?. But, he is a guide and he knows more about pigs than me. After he walked up, he told me to come over and place one behind her ear. I'm gettin the itch...I wanna hump some hills lookin for those piggies

Well, this situation has generated some really good discussion, at the same time staying civil. Kudos to all of those coming down on either side of this thing.

JungleBoy: I am saving your advice, as it is top notch. I completely agree that the details of something as expensive and personal as a hunting experience should be well discussed and completely agreed upon at the time the booking is done. Past experiences reported on here definately add to the mix. And if the score for Frank at Mustang Ranch really is 99 good hunts to 1 bad one, then as prospective customers, we need to take that with a grain of salt. But as the old saying goes, it only takes one bad apple to spoil the barrel.

Yotegetter: You've made a really good point here, and your experience will definately be something I take into consideration in booking hunts. I ain't made of money, so these "cheap" hunts will be the only way for me to get a guided experience, and any feedback, good or bad, is sorely needed for those shopping for this kind of thing.

It would really be nice to get some feedback from Mustang on this issue, but it's probably too much to ask for at this point.

Well, that's my final word. Hope I see some of you out in the field!

Yotegetter, I am in no way judging what you have said about Frank and your experience with him, I am sorry that you had a bad time. I myself had a great time with him about a month ago. What I can say is that maybe he was having a real bad day because it sounds like a different guy your describing. Jungleboy and I went on the hunt together and we told me that we like to stalk and not use dogs. Frank was ok with that, we only started using dogs after we had stalked with no success of seeing any pigs. As for shooting at a pig that Frank picks out and not you, you always have the options of saying you don't want that pig. The first day Frank and I can across a small sow that weighed about 90lbs. He told me to shoot but I simply told me that I was looking for a bigger pig, and he gave me a simply response "ok." He even offered to shot that pig himself and if by then end of the hunt I hadn't gotten a pig he would of given me some pork to take home. About an hour after that is when I bagged a nice 180lb sow. Frank runs his own business and he doesn't want to have customer unhappy because the negative reports will only hurt him.

I've got a bad feeling about any guide that encourages a hunter to whack a 90 lb hog on the first day. Sorry to hear about your experience, Jesse. Next time give Tom Willoughby a try. He's not the most gregarious guy in the world, but he's no loafer. He's obsessed with getting you a good hog.

Regards,
Paul

Being a guide who's had a hunter mauled, I'm always ready for the second shot, right after I pick out a good climbing tree and point it out to the client. I might add being a guide does not make you all knowing on the subject, take it from me.

Yotegetter,
Sorry to hear about your hunt. I'm one of the ones who gave "good Feedback" about Frank. I have had nothing but good experiences with him. I'm booked for the first weekend in april, and, there are 6 of us who go every year. If you don't mind, I'm going to ask him about your hunt, BEFORE we go.
In all fairness he needs to read this forum and have a chance to defend hisself. He may be willing to do whatever it takes to make it right, right as it can be, at least. It sounds like he needs to do something.
And, I do take it personally. I recomended him and if he did not treat you right then he let me down. Maybe I'll quit recomending him; and quit going. Our group spends thousands with him every year. And we are good tippers too.
Let me know if you don't mind, I would like to call him and ask what happened.
Thank you, Mark
