After 2 years finally figured out how to post pictures so here
goes. I hunted with a guide service for the first time in my life
this year. Went to Wheatland, Wyo got there and it was about
90 degrees. Hunted on Sunday afternoon for elk and spotted
about 120 elk on a hillside feeding, we did not have enough time
to get to them that evening. So the next morning we were on top
of the mtn. at daylight, when we got there the wind was howling
like most days in eastern wyo. so the elk were already in the trees.
After about 2 hrs of glassing we finally found the elk moving in the
trees below us, we snuck down the hill and cut them off as they
were headed for a saddle to cross the top to get out of the wind.
We thought they had beat us over the top when we heard a bull
bugle about 50 yds below us on a bench, we were to close so we
backed off a little and gave them some room to cross. The lead
cow held up forever b4 going over the top. Finally they all headed
out, after letting a few smaller bulls pass by I was starting to get a
little nervous but finally the end of the line came with the bigger bulls
bringing up the rear. I shot this bull at about 85 yds. with my 7mm-08.
He scores 391 gross and 377 net green. We will see in 60 days. The
buck is 30 1/8" wide I will post that story in Mule Deer. The outfitter
has some pictures in the field I will post when I get them from him.

Thanks everyone, you are right huntducks it could be a once
in a lifetime deal. I hope not but who knows. The outfit was
great, kind of a mom and pop deal, but they have plenty of
ground and they know it like the back of their hand. Speck the picture deal was tougher
than the hunting. LOL

Dang Kid:

Those are some beautiful racks. Both of them. What a season you have had. You can now take the next five years off.

Either one would be a nice trophy, but both at once is awesome. I see WY raised license prices again, I just got next years application packet. Elk tags are $492, plus $400 extra if you want to apply sor the special draw. I wonder how that will change draw odds and distribution between the pools?

Dawg>>my guess is that premium tags will give you a slight odds advantage boost.

From scanning the odds tables over the last few years, premium tag holders have been 'loosing advantage' considerably over the last few years....though in some cases you still had a 10%-20% better chance of draw going the premium tag route.

Oddly enough, there were a few hunts where the regular tag applicants had a better chance of drawing.

If I subscribed to all the tag advising services like Garth's Huntin' Fool, USO picks, et. al. and I knew what their first picks were, I'd put in for regular hunts there--premium elsewhere....just another swag at a strategy...lol.

What I really need is a golden ivory to rub for luck...that'd it do it.

Sounds like a great hunt! I like that bull, the rack has some real character to it. Will you be re-booking with the same outfitter in the future?
