Story to follow later. In the meantime, here is a teaser....

Hunting Elk in the rut is an experience that you truly cannot imagine until you do it. It is magical. What a spectacular show! The hunt was a little tougher than expected. We put a long stalk on a herd without being able to connect and had to work them by going all the way around them to head them off. Then we had to cross multiple wide open fields, cross a creek and then belly crawl to get within 400 yards of the herd. Kid made a 400 yard shot. The elk was 330 pounds live weight, right around 200 pounds hanging when fully dressed, skinned out, etc.

Congratulations to you and your daughter. I notice that she is wearing hunter orange. Is that by choice or some local regulation. I imagine that didn't make the stalk across the open fields any easier.

Thanks. I am not sure I could have made that shot in the heavy wind. Where I would have aimed was different than where she did. My shot would have sailed wide. She did a great job figuring it out an making a great shot.

They make you wear a DFW issued hunter orange vest that has the DFW logo on the back so that they can tell that you are an approved hunter. They are small, they use them for the youth pheasant hunts so all you have to do is pin it to your back. As far as wearing full hunter orange vests and hats with orange, we did that for safety by choice. There were 6 other tag holders and their spotters/helpers out there hunting and since it is s flat out there, you want to be seen to avoid cross fire, etc. It was a good thing too because we put a half mile stalk on a herd and as we were getting set up, we saw another hunter and his helper in the background so we did not shoot. Thank goodness they were wearing orange too. This enabled them to get an animal and it saved us all from a bad situation.
