Nice, 400 yards! Is that a Browning rifle? Yum, elk steaks on a grill....

Yes it is. Browning BAR Oil Finish Semi Automatic in .300 Win Mag with a Burris 3-9X40 scope and a muzzle break to reduce recoil. Have killed deer, many pigs and now an elk with it.

I am writing up the story for my friend's blog. I will post the link when it is ready. In the meantime, here are some more pics.

It was unusually cool with heavy wind and low clouds during the hunt. Here is a pic of the clouds blowing in and my daughter standing on the tailgate glassing for elk. Next are pics of the last field we had to cross to get within shooting range. You can see how it is all plowed up. Then my hunting partner Matt and my daughter crawled on their bellies up and over a levy that had star thistle and Elk scat in order to get closer. In the crawling pictures, you can make out some of the Elk in the distance, especially the bottom picture.

Here are some more kill shots and a shot of Matt and Serra cleaning the Elk and then a shot of the meat that I was processing at home. The Elk was 330 pounds live weight. I took the bulk of it (170 pounds to the butcher) and took the back straps, tenderloins, heart, liver and flanks home to process myself. Dead, skinned and fully dressed it was right around 200lbs.

Nothing special just the much sought after d3-5, awsome looking meat there, still hopfull to use my points one of these years. On a side note, been seeing deer this week up feeding around 12:30-1:30, so don't take that midday break, bring lunch and stay in the field. Good luck

We have killed more deer from 10:30 to 2pm. I always ask myself why I am waking up at o-dark-early to hit the field. Good luck this year. We will be camping at Jackson Meadows in space 27 at Pass Creek.

The department of fish and game does a lot of apprentice hunts. Make sure she applies for them. Also, since you are in So CAL, check California Deer Association. They do a fully guided doe deer hunt at Tejon every year. It is free and they supply the ammo too! There are good odds she can get drawn for that. Check with them for details.
