I've been reading this board for a long time, but finally signed up and decided to post. Thanks for all the great info. I finally have something worthwhile to say. ;-)

So I went pig hunting again after more than 20 years. The first couple attempts long ago were Ft Hunter Liggett, Lake Sonoma and the Cazadero area. All I got was exercise on those trips. Until last weekend, I've never taken anything larger than a pheasant.

I joined the Safari Club last year, and we recently had a local SF Bay area chapter hunt near Hollister/Paicines at the RS Bar Ranch and Guest house.
Guided Hunting : Deer, Birds, Boar : RS Bar Resort Ranch : Paicines, California
What a great weekend! Everything was top notch, and the place is fantastic. While this is a higher end trip, it's a working ranch filled with deer, turkey, quail and lots of pigs. It's a former Orvis bird hunting destination, and the setup is incredible. Mine was a 3 day event, arriving Friday afternoon and leaving Sunday morning.

Friday I arrived and we went out late in the day. Glassed a couple pigs and started the stalk. We got to within about 75 yards of a nice ugly black boar, and I was getting settled for the shot. The guide told me "anytime now", and right then the pig turned tail end to me. I waited a few seconds for him to turn, but he didn't present a shot. Then he was off into the woods. Darn! I was really bummed, but glad I didn't take a bad shot.
Next morning after my buddy missed a shot, I was presented another pig in a field. Fairly long stalk and the last 30 yards were belly crawl. And this time the guide didn't get to finish his sentence before there was a loud boom. I knocked her flat with a 160gr Barnes copper bullet in a Federal round from my 7mm Mag at about 35 yards. Back legs kicked a couple times, but it was over in a couple seconds. Went through both shoulders on a spine shot. I estimate she was about 120+ lbs or so. Never did weigh it though.
Anyway, just wanted to tell about a great weekend. The other members were wonderful folks, and we did some trap shooting as well. The Ranch is a great place, and there is a lot of wildlife. All things considered, it's a good deal. I got 3 days of guided hunting, all meals, and a room nicer than my house. The lodge is really nice and there are some great trophies on the walls. The pigs there aren't know to be really super large, but they have particularly large tusks. Virtually all the boars we glassed you could see the teeth. Highly recommended.
I'll try to post a pic later.

Congrats on the first of what will become many!

Sounds like a nice hunt, and a great memory. Good luck on your next ones.

Congrats on your kill. I have been hog hunting for about 5 years now and I haven't hit a hog yet but I have made jack rabbits pay for it. I do most all my hunting at Liggett and I have seen dead hogs on the side of the road and several runnign away from me.
