This hunt was back in the spring, but I definitely want to share the story!
My dad, brothers and I got out around 6am. Starting out a typical day in Mendocino County, the fog limits vision to about 75yards so we didn't walk too much. Can't really hunt effectively when you can't see the hillside right in front of you!
Around 0745, the land starts to clear and we begin to cover some ground. With the amount of pig sign we came across, excitement rose but after hours of walking and patiently waiting, no pigs. I did see plenty of deer along with a buck rubbing his velvet on some branches 30 yards from where I was sitting. We head back to camp for a couple of hours to release some pressure on the land we were covering.
We head back out around 1500 and the hunt is back on. Nothing but deer are seen. Expectations and excitement slowly dwindles as does the sun. I decide to sit on a hill with excellent views as there was about an hour left of sun light. The windchill was pretty painful by this time so we all decide to head back to the truck. As we get in, my dad says "let's just sit in here for a few minutes." No more than five minutes later, my little brother jerks his head hard to the right and says "THERE! A PIG!"
My little brother growing up was one of those hunters who says "OH THERE, A RABBIT! Oh never mind, it's just a rock." So instinctively I was just thinking there's nothing there, probably just another rock, but I turn to look and there was a hog 70 yards away! I jump out, grab my Savage 270 and magazine loaded with some 150gr Barnes Vortex TTSX and get the beast in my crosshairs. My dad says "wait, wait, let me get backup!" As he steps to my side a couple feet, the pig turns it's head, looks right at us and darts down and away from us! I try to follow it in my scope and lose sight of it. I deshoulder my gun to get a good look, shoulder again and find it about 15 yards before a steep ravine. I get a quick exhale and fire at the front shoulder about 90 yards away. It disappears.
My dad goes running down the hill towards it and I flank to the right to get a good vantage point. My dad gets 20yards from where the pig was when I took the shot, stopped, looked at me with a big smile and head nod. "Wooooo!"... I walk over quickly and see the boar in the ravine as it gets a couple more limb kicks in, and passes. My brothers rush down the hill with big smiles on their faces and all I had to say was "now that's how you shoot!"
The pig was about 215lbs. This isn't your typical first hog hunt, but it is one I will remember for the rest of my life!
