Went up to hunt two friends property up between lake Nacimiento and Lake San Antonio this weekend.

No pigs at all. We hunted a 475 acre property, and my other friend who has two properties at 1,500 and 1,800 acres. Both properties have food, cover and plenty of water from springs, ponds and streams. There was no recent signs of hogs at either place. The owners who are avid pig hunts, guided us and drove us all over the properties and there was nothing to be seen at all. All pig rootings we saw except for one very small place were at least a year old and more likely 3 years old.

The owner of the 475 property hasn't seen much in the way of pigs this year. The other owners has seen a few on one of the properties in the last two weeks but none on the other for a while.

Owner #2 (large properties) said he has seen less and less pigs in the last couple of years. He blames a neighboring owner who has allowed a hunting lease to a woman who is a guide and goes for pigs with dogs. He says once the pigs get run by dogs a bit, they clear out. (she actually crossed onto his property by nearly half a mile with clients once, not good!)

On a good note, we got some quail and saw a lot of coveys. The quail numbers seem to be up and dove were everywhere. It will be a good late dove season if they hold.

We sure did. Any day out in the field is good. Bringing home some quail to my wife makes the night good too.

Not to be a debbie downer or stir anything up, but isn't Deedy the only female in that area that runs guide services?? If so, I doubt she crosses into other properties, because when I was there, she made it clear, if I shot a hog and it runs into another property, to tell her, so she can call the property owner and DFG to recover the hog.

I have no idea who the woman is that he was referring to and I don't know anything about a 'Deedy' so I can't say anything to that. The guy who owns the land told me the story. I have no reason to doubt his story.

the bigger point was that in that much acreage, there were no hogs or signs of hogs. The owner was telling me his theory on why they haven't been around.

probabally has a lot to do with fires and drought. The hog pupulation has had a tough last few years. Your lack of game is pretty much that same as the rest of the tri county area. Hogs this time of year have just been finishing up raiding grape vinards. As for the neighbor who is running dogs on the neighboring property. This is the second time Iv heared somone say that dogs will push hogs out of an area. Its true in the short term but not in the long term. If thats the case than there should be more hogs on the property that you are hunting due to the fact that the neighbor should be pushing them onto the property that your hunting. All in all I would put the lack of game on drought and fire. Its consistant with the rest of the monterey, san benito, and san louis obisbo counties lack of hogs.
