Trying the picture again - and here is the story.

We thought we might go home empty handed, but on the last morning we had to hunt before he had to leave to go back to school, he harvested this elk. At 15 years old this is his second elk and he is pumped up that he has tied his sister in big game animals taken (three total including deer). We had hunted hard for 4 days and the only cows we had seen were 4 of them running full out with a bull in tow on opening day, and no chance of a good shot. Well we hunted the entire unit, all of the best areas I knew of and all we saw were bulls. Could have shot bulls every day if he had a bull tag.

Anyway on the morning of day five I told him he could hunt until noon then we would have to pack it up. I tried the only spot left we had not checked at the highest elevation in the unit up on Mormon Mountain. 15 min. out of the truck and up the hill, I spotted this one looking us 85 yards away and told him. He moved into position to shoot standing, but was shaking too much and he took a knee, the only problem was the grass was too high and he could not shoot. The elk was starting to get nervous. As he calmed himself and rose and re-steadied his shot, the elk started to turn and move away, but my boy picked the available neck shot that presented itself and sent one flying. One shot with the .270 and down she went in her tracks.

I love taking the kids hunting and watching them beam with excitement when they get their game. The cool thing is now he is much bigger and stronger and could help me drag it up into the trailer. Those weight lifting classes are paying off. :smile-yellow:
