My son (who is 6) has been asking me to go hog hunting. We left the house at 5:40 this morning for his first hog hunt. We took our new black mouth cur puppy who is 9 months old and has only seen one pig before. Our 1 1/2 year old cur cross went too. I figured we would just rifle one if we got the chance. It would be good for the dogs to get out, and if we saw some little ones maybe we could put the dogs on them. We started hunting at 6:25. I was just driving around slowly and doing a lot of glassing. By 7:45 the sun was bright and we had not seen a hog or any fresh sign. The deer on the other hand were out like crazy. We had seen 24 deer total, and believe it or not 14 were bucks. One was about a 21 or 22 inch three pointer, maybe 18 high. I had figured we would not get a pig at this point, so I decided to use the rest of our time as a training mission for the pup and the young dog. I put the young dog out and drove for about half a mile. She was getting out and hunting a fair amount. My son kept asking me to put the pup out. I decided to take a chance and let the pup out with the other dog. I was just hoping they would not go chase some trash. Any how I put the pup out, and both dogs took off. They were gone for about 5 minutes, then they came back and checked in. They took off again down the road, so we proceeded to drive slowly. A few minutes later I thought I heard a bark. Then my son said he heard another bark. We raced down the road a bit, then stopped to listen. Now we could hear some barks and squealing. I drove another 100 yards or so, and stopped. At this point we could see 150 yards down the hill, the two dogs and a small hog. We ran down the hill, got in there, snapped a couple of photos, finished off the hog. Then we praised two young dogs for a great job well done. You could not ask for a better day, or a more special hunt than to share a first hunting experience with a young child especially your own. I have taken lots of hogs, and big tuskers, this is the best hog yet.

I have guided Archers with my dogs in the past. That can provide for an intense hunt. It was more exciting than a firearm hunt for sure. We have even used the dogs to locate a wounded boar, that had been stuck with an arrow. You would be in for a great hunt that's for sure.

I live in Hollister, and I am fortunate enough to hunt privat land in San Benito county. This hunt took place on about 10,000 acres, in the south east portion of the county.
