I am a newbie to pig hunting and I was just wondering if anyone had any information about the population in Napa County(north end). Any info would be great. Also, I enjoy all the stories that everyone brings to this forum. I've been reading most of them when I can and they have been very informative.

Fish (be careful with your alias, someone may embelish it... like me!)

We've been camping with the family in the Sonoma and Napa area near Russian River. My brother says he saw a wild pig one time.

But I am not sure there areas there that permits hunting. I know that next to the Russian River where my brother alleged to have seen the pig is a private vineyard. Even the place where we had the camps are private campgrounds. I have no doubt though that the banks of the Russian River are ideal pig habitat... lush and muddy and must be pig heaven.

Anyway, good luck in you search and keep us posted.

hey guys, thanks for the info and the welcome. The area I plan to hunt is only 300 acres(private land) and my long time friend says years ago(like 10 years), he did see bedding areas. It is bordered by vineyards to the west. The area is about 30 minutes north of the castle in Napa where ever that is. I've never been there but they've been harvesting deer there for many years until the grape guy came through.

Code3punk, my favorite fish to spank is stripper bass. any bass is fine with me.

Bleatslayer, I don't mind emblishment as long as it doesn't refer to any brokebackism. I can handle a good joke but I can give one also so it's okay.

Roman Archer, I am a gun hunter untill recently. I just bought a bowtech about three months ago. I guess you can call me a bow hunter also because I've taking one jackrabbit with my bow and that's all the kills I've got. Before that, I have only hunted with a gun.

roman archer, that is true of what you said. I felt better as a hunter when I took that rabbit. Usually, I shoot them from 100 yards with my 17 hmr but getting within 15-20 yards and then shooting it. It's a whole different aspect of hunting. I could only imagine that shooting at a deer or pig will be ever better with a whole lot more shaking. Over the past couple months, I've been reading the post on lake sonoma and I've been thinking about making a run there before they close it off. I've been putting if off for so long and will definetly make a trip soon before the month ends. Do you have any info on the terrian? I'm not worried about seeing pig because I'm pretty sure I won't on this first trip. This would be a scouting trip for next year.

Thanks again,

CWH

hey fishspanker,
going after big game is exciting, and once i complete a past hunting story which i hope will make a good read and inspire people to consider bowhunting and give people a chance to understand my passion for hunting and the outdoors, which will be done soon and i will be happy to send it to anyone who wants a copy. i will just say this, the first time i harvested an animal with a bow i decided right thier and then never to hunt with a gun agian, after years of being a die hard gun hunter, thats just my personal choice.i still belive in useing guns for protection and have nothing agianst people using guns to hunt with.when you have to put food on the table use what ever weapon it takes as long as it legal and does not break any state, federal or local laws! and always try to use ethics when hunting...................

Fishspanker – I have hunted the Knoxville area (that’s the area your probably talking about) for years. There used to be pigs there but they are all gone now. Some people still get some hogs near the Lake Berryessa area, but the access to the land is only by boat. I have never been there so I couldn’t even tell you how to get there. There are still pigs in the Cashe Creek area but the only people that ever get hogs are the ones with good dogs. Try the Indian Valley Resv if you have a couple dogs.

Roman Archer, I would have to experience it before I decide to hang up my rifle but I can understand you though. There must be a feeling in taking a big game with a bow that there isn't in using a rifle. I will soon find out, I am pretty sure no matter if it takes a lifetime or not, but I could never just hunt with a bow because my father only hunts with a rifle and spending time with him is more valuable than anything in the world.

bpnclark, this piece of land I want to hunt for pigs is only 300 acres and it is sorta near the lake. It is all private land but thank you for your help. I really appreciate it.

,
thankyou for the reply, i have been on m/s word working on my hunting story, i want to try to finish it up by monday, it does a number on your eyes im going to take a little break in a few min. and get back on later.
hey, thats great you get to still hunt with your dad, its been about a decade for me. thats what i like about hunting,as time passes by its just natural to progress and change to keep things exciting so we dont get board and turn a positive things into a negitive things. for example i shot only 20 yards with a bow for years because hunters back east really discuorage you to shoot any futher but i chose to learn to shoot out to forty yards and it gave me alot more great oppurtunities to kill game and made hunting more productive and fun for me agian, but thats me.take your time and let nature take its course and continue to enjoy hunting with your dad with or without a bow.have a great day!tra be back soon................

E-mail me if you need any help out there. Private land is the only way for pigs in Napa. And if you get one (or two) Browns Valley Market does a great job processing the meat. Good luck

bpnclark, where is Browns Vally Market at? I have lived in Vacaville for 41 years and have never herd of it. I do all my own meat cutting but I am in need of some sausage mix and maybe they will have it. Thanks,BUCK

Browns Valley Market is in Napa on Browns Valley Rd (off First St/HWY 29). Everyone from Solano to Sonoma gets their meat processed there because they’re the only ones around right now. They do a good job but charge a lot. They do everything from livestock to wild game, but they don’t do bear. I took a cow elk this year and it cost a little over $200 (91c a lb). But then again - everything in Napa cost more.

Thanks bpnclark I am glad I cut up my own at them prices. You should try it your self it is easy and you get better cuts, most butchers run it threw a saw. BUCK
