WILDLIFE ALBUM -- A century ago, National Geographic Magazine published its first wildlife photographs. This year, it is mining a treasury of images with special collectors' editions. The third such summary, "100 Best Wildlife Pictures," is a stunner.
From Arctic, to jungle, to savannah and the deep sea, this book shares exotic images such as a cheetah in hot pursuit of a gazelle, a hippo tiptoeing underwater, an open-mouthed jungle bat making a split-second decision not to bite a toxic frog. This collection is marred by a few full-page ads, but enhanced by prose sketches of the photographers -- including Frans Lanting and Mike Nichols -- who contributed. Their images constitute an eloquent argument for worldwide habitat preservation. The volume makes an impressive, yet inexpensive gift for any lover of the wild. $9.95 from newsstands and bookstores; also available at http://www.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/bestwildlife.
