5/30/08

$1.1 Million Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup stops at Pleasure Island May 30 - June 1
Port Arthur, Texas - The sun is out, the waters are warm and the fish are biting. That can mean only one thing - the return of the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup to Pleasure Island in Port Arthur. The nation's premier saltwater fishing championship is docking in the Gulf waters May 30 - June 1 and promises to deliver bigger thrills than ever. The three-day fishing frenzy officially begins at 6 a.m. on Friday, May 30 with the morning launch and ends with the dramatic final day weigh-in at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 1 when one teams walks away with the $50,000 grand prize and valuable points in the Academy Team of the Year presented by Crocs standings.

"Our Redfish Cup anglers look forward to visiting the Lone Star State every year because of the friendly people and the world-class fishing, and we're excited to be back in Port Arthur," said David Healy, senior director of sales and sponsorship for Career Sports & Entertainment, the agency that owns the Redfish Cup. "This year we've got the best field we've ever had, more prize money than ever before and tons of family-friendly activities. We're poised to make the 2008 season the best on record for our fans and anglers."

"Port Arthur couldn't be happier to welcome the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup back to our community for the second year in a row," said Tammy Kotzur, executive director of the Port Arthur Convention and Visitors Bureau. "The fact that the Redfish Cup has chosen to return to our shores is a testament to the area as a world-class fishing destination with something fun for everyone." The Port Arthur event will be televised as a two-part episode airing July 19 and 26 at 8:30 a.m. on ESPN2.

But the best saltwater anglers in the world won't be the only attraction. A Youth Fishing Rodeo with prizes awarded is open to the public and will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 31 on the Pleasure Island Boardwalk for a $5 donation to benefit the Children's Miracle Network. Activities throughout the weekend include a horseshoe tournament, boat show, car show and food and beverage concession. Texas Artists Museum will have paper mache fish painting for the children and artist Albert Faggard will display his outdoor nature scenes. A "redfish calling" contest will be held Saturday prior to the weigh-in. Call the Port Arthur Convention and Visitors Bureau at 409-985-7822 for more information.

The new season of the Redfish Cup also marks a new community outreach initiative called Net Gains. The program allows local youth the opportunity to attend a free fishing and conservation clinic taught by the Redfish Cup pros on Thursday, May 29 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Academy Sports + Outdoors in Port Arthur (8453 Memorial Drive). Ages seven and up are welcome and all attendees will receive a Redfish Cup goodie bag and a photo with the anglers upon completion. In addition, some of the top angler teams on tour will be visiting the Academy store in Beaumont (7130 Eastex Frwy) on Wednesday, May 28 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for an autograph signing and giveaway. The event is free and open to the public.

Now in its sixth season, the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup is the nation's premier saltwater fishing championship. The event will visit five venues across the Southeast in 2008 and give away more than $1 million in prize and contingency monies.

Port Arthur is the second stop of the 2008 season, which kicked off in Punta Gorda, Fla. in April. The Redfish Cup will make two additional stops in the Southeast before the season-ending championship Oct. 10-12 in Biloxi, Miss. Each event features a $50,000 grand prize and more than $193,000 in total payout.
