Jesse - I bought mine at Big 5 just prior to going hunting a couple weeks ago. Sounds like someone at big 5 didn't know what they are doing.

one suggestion for Kali hunters is to get the Lifetime Hunting License and Lifetime Big Game options with DFG .....

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/lifetime/lifetimeinfo.html
-- The Lifetime Hunting License entitles the hunter to a hunting license each year for the remainder of his or her life.
-- The Additional Big Game Hunting Privileges include a First-Deer Tag Application and five Resident Wild Pig Tags.

I did that several years ago. Each year about May I am mailed my next-year's hunting license and 5 pig tags.

Jessie, just be glad the cashier at Big 5 are not piloting you next flight!

After my many dealings with Big 5 in the past I would think that the problem you encountered was likely operator error rather then the computer system. Even when they had the old style licenses and tags there were many instances of operator error.

OPERATOR ERROR.
I got it doped out. I went to a Big 5 in Van Nuys today with my wife to buy her a pig tag for June's trip with NativeHunt. First they couldn't find a way to sell me a pig tag for THIS year (through 6.30.11). After several funny excuses - maybe it is too late, maybe there are no more pigs and whatever (ha, ha. maybe they all flew to Texas), I said lets go ahead and buy the 2011-12 license for my wife and get all that and see what I can do. So I worked the computer with (for) the lady I was able to quickly get all my wife's 2011-12 stuff, deer tags, pig tag etc. Then I see a button on the screen for 2010 tags and sure enough, I touch on that and all still usable 2010 tags come up, i.e. pig tags. So in two more clicks, I have my wife's a 2010-2011 pig tag. Done.

The problem was clearly the clerk (and in this case manager) who didn't know how to pick the year before entering the list of license - tags for purchase. All the appropriate stuff is listed on the DFG license site - I saw it; they just have to know how to get it. Frankly, it isn't hard as I did it but clearly clerks at Big 5 stores in urban land are not into high volume hunting stuff and while they know how to "ring up" running shoes, the somewhat baroque DFG site is unfamiliar to most of them.

As I said, just be glad they dont' have these clerks piloting your next flight as in that setting, "Operator Error" can have some real bad outcomes...

Are you looking for a pig tag for 2010/2011 to finish out the next couple of months or a 2011/2012 tag?

I still have a piggy tag for the last years license, but picked up a new paper ticker tag for 2011/2012 with no problems at all.

The girl printed it up fast right after I got my new license.

So, there isn't any way to get a late season ticker tape tag even if your in the new system?

Is it a problem at the license dealer, or at DFG's end?

Yes you can still get pig tags for the current season. The problems that people are having is OPERATOR ERROR on the clerks part

Jesse and all,
Asaxon (above) is correct, it was 100% operator error. Yesterday I sold six 2010 pig tags to six guys heading for Tejon ranch. The Automated Licensing System (ALS) is touch screen so, after scanning your DL or inputting your info, the clerk needed to touch the "hunting" tab. This pulls up several tabs, including a "2011" tab and a "2010". By touching the 2010 tab, all tags and licenses still available for the 2010-2011 hunt season will appear (obviously, deer tags, bobcat tags, etc. for the 2010 seasons that have ended will not be available). 2010 pig tags will be available at all ALS equipped license dealers until June 30, 2011 (the end of the license year) provided the clerk knows how to get to the right screen.

I looked at the screen real quick to try and find the 2010 tags to help the clerk out and no go. If shouldn't be that hard to find IMHO. If DFG isn't going to give the vendors any training the software needs to be intuitive and KISS.

20. How much ALDS training will DFG provide to License Agents?
There are two categories of license agent training:

  • Initial training will occur as the new system is implemented. DFG will conduct regional classroom training sessions (statewide) just prior to license agent’s receiving their ALDS POS equipment. The ALDS POS terminal is equipped with a training mode and DFG will provide a toll free Help Desk service.
  • On-going training for new license agents, new employees, as a refresher, and as changes occur over time, will be provided. For on-going training including system troubleshooting, license agents will have access to a toll free Help Desk service and the ALDS POS system training mode.
