I could make a few suggestions for you. I have hunted out of Vaalwater, but not with Syd Young. You can expect the weather to dip down into the 40's at night and early morning and to reach 80's during the day. You may bring your own firearm, but paperwork is getting more and more difficult. I would talk to Syd about a gun rental, or you can even bring a bow without having to do any of the difficult paperwork.

What game do you plan to get hunting? Have you compiled a list?

Vaalwater is one of the central core cities in the northern Province for big game hunting. You could have done far worse then this area. The weather as described above is accurate. At about 6:30 PM it will feel as if the refrigerator has been turned on. Once the sun drops it will feel freezing cold. Bring a warm coat, hat and gloves for riding in the back of the open landcruiser after the sun goes down.

Rainfall should be zero to very minimal in July. I would opt for the earlier the better. With a July hunt you have already passed up the prime dates for hunting. We don't even hunt our consession after July 15th.

Your about 2.5-3 hours from the airport driving after you arrive. Make sure you stop in the black Mamba curio shop in Vaalwater to get things for your family. Much better then the airport for tourist gifts. By the way the english translation for Vaalwater is Greywater if you care to know.

The rumors surrounding the gun permits are getting way out of control. It's no big deal. Sure it's more effort then it was pre 9/11 but so is everything else. The best way to do this is to simply get it done well before you leave the USA. Then upon arrival you just get the permits signed off and walk through the doors and into the general population of people with your guns. By comparison is WAY WAY easier then bringing a gun into te USA!

Go to this site and they will help you get the permits organised and you will breeze through the system as if it were not there.

It seems as if the SA government can't quite figure out what it wants to do with muzzleloaders. As not very long ago, they did not fall under the same guidelines as rifles. But just recently, they changed their minds again and placed muzzleloaders back under the same guidelines as rifles.

Dogging, why in the world did you book a hunt with somebody who cannot help you?

Just beg out of that deal and come hunt with me. I have a long list of satisfied hunters, a top class lodge and I live in the USA off season to help you with anything you could want.

I have room in June, so call me and lets put this together. There is not likely anything you would want to know about hunting South Africa that I don't know or cannot help you with. I have hunted with over 300 people in the last 15 years now and have seen the changes over those years regarding the laws and your gun permits, shipping trophies and the whole dip pack industry.

Why not just deal with somebody who can actually help you and make this expensive trip zero risk? I'm endlessly amazed at how many people book an expensive hunting trip and then come to chat forums for help rather then dealing with the guy they are actually paying for this!

With all the expense you are paying these guys, why not get the straight scoop right from the outfitter? Just bail out and come hunt with me. I will make 100% certain that anything you need is answered and sorted out with ease! If your going this year did you apply for your gun permits yet? Did you know you should? Do you know how? If your outfitter says you don't need to are you aware that you will be in the permit line on average three hours and as long as 6-8 hours standing in a line at the airport? This after a 17 hour flight! Having the permits ahead of time will have you out in just a few minutes after you get your luggage.

Stop fooling around with these amatures and hunt with a guy who has really made this a successful operation, easy and effortless for the hunters coming over and who has had books published on the way to do this.

go to this site: www.huntingadventures.net

See for yourself just how much better you could be with my operation and the comfort and knowledge knowing there will be no stress or worry with any of the plans while hunting with me

JJ is right, I do not know the guide you mention so cannot offer any opinion on him or his outfit personally. It is however very good advice to get references and talk to people that have hunted with a guide, any guide before you actually purchase a hunt. A good PH and outfitter will have all the answers and will provide them probably before you even think to ask. South Africa is crawling with PH's, some are excellent and some should not be guiding anyone after doves let alone larger game. Check the outfitter and guides out properly, get references and phone them, only book when you know exactly what you are getting, what all the costs are. game that is suddenly not available, facilities that are not quite what they looked like in the brochure, costs that suddenly appear can all turn a dream hunt into a nightmare. I do not know JJ, but looking at his website and at his pics and the answers he gives to aspiring african hunters in here, I think you would be well advised to give serious thought to booking through him.

My advice, for what its worth, which is nothing!
Go to Namibia. Cancel your hunt to RSA, hunt Namibia. I've hunted both and there is no comparison. I won't go back to RSA. Generally its cheaper also. And, no hassle with firearms.
Sounds like you need to do a lot of research on this hunt.
Sorry Hack, but that's the way I feel.
