im need help, i have a deer hunting background, im looking for pig hunting spots on oahu for the winter, public or private if possible. i love to gun hunt and bow hunt but bow hunting seems fruitless here. i just cant find the pigs, ive hunted the pali hunting area and its very steep and thick and wet, i dont even know where to start there. i have connected on two sows in the kuaokala but you cant hunt til the spring time now. i just need help where to start on other pig spots. any help would be grateful!!!

I'm on Maui, but can sympathize with your situation. Generally, here all the heavily forested areas are hunted with dogs. The area I generally is now closed so I am hunting in the rainforest. I notice the Pali area is fair chase only. On Maui, the fair chase area has sooo much more pigs than the other areas.

I gather you are not seeing any sign at all? No plows? There are still some guavas going off, I would check under those trees for activity. The forest can be unbelievably thick. We usually follow game trails to check areas. Also, baiting is allowed. You however, cannot trap the pigs. I know a bowhunter who just regularly brings his home garbage to the area to bait the pigs. With the guavas still ripening, I don't know how effective it would be as there is so much other available food.

Wish I could be of more help!

hey thanks, i really appreciate it. i am find sign here and there i found a ok trail but its pretty high up and i didnt think that pigs would be up that high. i dunno if there are goats up there or not or even if goats would be in jungle that thick, but i did find a guava tree that was tore up under it with lots of tracks. i just never made the connection to pigs being that high up but i am going to try hunting that site now and ill let you know how i do thanks again

I'd just pay the airfare and hunt Lanai or the Big Island for a weekend. I hear that there's a Super Ferry also. Deer hunting on Lanai is AWESOME.:archer green:

I don't know how much help I would be, but I am in the same situation as you, would like to archery hunt pigs. Sounds like you have more info then me on where to hunt, but I have a few things I am checking out. We should touch base and compare notes sometime.

I am looking into schofield barracks and the mililani gulch. I know they allow hunting on schofield, I just need to figure out what is needed to be able to do that. I know that is a ways from Kailua but when I figure it out it could be worth it. Like you I am keeping my eye out for private land. I know I went to tripler for some work and they had pig traps set there. The trap I saw had 3 pigs in it. The guy came to get it said they were releasing around the Pali area. He also said they had taken about 25 pigs out of there in the last month. They were definitely tearing the area up, maybe worth looking into as well.

actually i been thinking about looking into scofeild, everyone i talk to says that where the hunting is the pigs are in there, i have seen proof of pigs in the pali public area as well as seein guys pulling them outa there once or twice. theres alot of land that not really private but not really public to but i dont know how to go about getting permission for areas like that, area b huula area and the kahana valley hunting area look promising. thick stuff like the pali worries me, scent and noise wise anyway i like more open ground, like huula and the makua and makaha coast line areas. i just dont how to approach area that arent labeled as public hunting or private farms so many urban areas hold large numbers of animals i just cant find any regs on huntin non designated puiblic areas. but i dont know gets frustrating with out help

Hello,
I did find out about a rod and gun club on schofield, so I am planning on going to there meeting on Dec.9. Hopefully I will have some good info after that. I have never been to a few of the spots that you were talking about. How is it hinting around kuaokal? I will keep posted on whatever info I come across, good luck.

Hey guys,
Some additional info/suggestions. When we have a bright moon, I find the pigs do not become active until late afternoon. I generally do not get serious about finding a pig (other than one sleeping) until after 4:00 PM. In the thick stuff, I hunt more with my nose and ears than sight. The pigs have a mild musky smell, not unpleasant. I have also shot a number of pigs after only hearing a branch break. Also, in the drier areas, hunting in the rain can be really productive. Where I hunt, the pigs come out to feed in the rain.
